The party was thick with people, as the atmosphere was choked of egos, scored by a band that had a little too much to drink. There was a commotion in the middle of the room, and I did my best to avoid it. Some celebrity of sorts, but I kept to the fringes wondering why I came at all. I was never found of such events, but the catering was usually to die for. I stood by the refreshments with a half empty drink in my hand, warmed by my neglect to it. Then I saw what the excitement was all about. A women with an other worldly grace, stood amidst the crowd, her long golden hair and scantly clad ample features contrasted her to the multitude gathered around, the kind of girl all the guys go for. She made eyes at me, and I pretended not to notice, but her perpetual glances became more and more overt. "What does this woman want with me," I thought. "Yeah she's pretty, but beauty can be deceiving."
She handed her glass off to some poor chap as she slowly made her way over to me, being stopped several times along the way. I tried to find some route of escape without seeming too rash, but while I was observing her I allowed myself to be surrounded by vociferous attendees. Before I knew it, she was right in front of me without even making a sound. She smiles so brightly I feel a tinge of warmth inside, along with the chilled gaze of every man there. I smile back, but can not quite hide my concern.
"Parties are meant to be enjoyed," she says softly, yet confidently, as a smirk forms on her face.
"Too many people for my taste, and not enough air," I replied casually, trying to keep my distance.
"Then let us go get some air," she said while wrapping her arm around mine. The hate was palpable as we walked to the balcony, and I wanted to be anywhere else but there.
She shivers in the cool of the night, and I asked haphazardly, "Are you cold, you certainly aren't wearing a lot." I cringe internally, expecting a fiery response, but she slightly smiles, and looks into the distance.
"The cold really doesn't bother me anymore," she replied in thought. Nonetheless, I took my jacket off and draped it over her revealed shoulders. "Thanks," she says, "But, you are too kind." We stand there for a while, gazing out the overlook, and the silence would be deafening had it not been for the party behind us. I wonder if I should just take my leave, but then I notice an almost sadness in her eyes.
"Thank you," I finally said as I let out a sigh, "For getting me away from that party." "I was kind of anxious about coming out here with you, as I do not want to draw the ire of those inside." "Thats not your fault, though, I apologize if I have bored or offended you." Her eyes flashed with concern and hope.
"No, not at all," she responded, "Here I was thinking I was boring you." We both stared at each other for a second, then burst into laughter, as the tension could be felt leaving. A few close to the window looked puzzlingly at us, as they commented to themselves and returned to the party. "I should thank you for joining me out here, and going along with my whims," she continued, "It was quite selfish of me."
"Not at all," I retorted, "I am quite enjoying myself." "Its not everyday I get such a beautiful women's att-" I stopped, as the clouds had parted and the moon shone brilliantly upon her, and for the first time I really looked at her. I was captivated by her beauty. A slight blush came across her face as mine began to flush, and I grabbed the ledge as we both looked away. *"Sorry," *I said after a moment had past and my heart rate began to settle. "You probably hear that all the time."
She placed her hand on mine, smiled, and said, "Thank you." "I only hear that from those who look at me like some object to be obtained, and its nice coming from you." "I noticed you didn't look at me like that." "Instead, there was a strength and a great sadness in your eyes." "I guess I just noticed a kindred spirit in you", she said as she placed her hand on her chest and looked away. "I really wanted to get to know you," she said as she look back at me, her hair falling over her face. Without thinking, I carefully tucked her hair behind her ear, as her eyes glistened in the starlight and a warmth radiated from inside her. I held her face as she once again brought her hand to mine. We look at each other for what seemed like an eternity, as we found ourselves slowly moving towards one another. Our faces drew closer until our lips were just barely apart, the a sudden commotion inside startles us both. Her name was called several times from the party as she squeezed my hand. "We will have to continue this another time." She said winking at me, as she reluctantly leaves my presence.
I stand on the balcony for a while, my head in a swirl, until the evening chill brings me to. My confidence renewed, I return to the party, and thoroughly enjoy the rest of the festivities.
