What's the story of your Summoner Name?

Kairoptra·7/26/2017, 1:58:47 PM·41 votes·8,130 views

I'd like to establish two rules right off the bat:

  1. Even if it's the most obvious thing in the world, please explain it in full, even if it's just "I really like X champion" or "I was trying to think of something funny" or something like that.

  2. Please don't just use a meme or emoji or whatever.

I'll start:

When trying to think of a name, I started going over that which interested me. I remembered that at the time I really liked bats, so I looked up the scientific name to see what it would yield. The bat genus is called "Chiroptera", which I read as "KAI-rop-TUR-uh", but immediately realized that couldn't be it. I found out the real pronunciation, but the one I had originally read stuck with me. I decided to spell it out as the phonetics sounded, and because if wasn't snappy enough, I combined the last two syllables. What I ended up was Kairoptra (KAI-rop-TRUH).

Now it's your turn. Let's see what you got! [slayer-pantheon-popcorn]

EDIT:

Where the actual f*ck did all you guys come from? I make one post and 15 hours later it has 179 comments and 877 views. IT HASN'T EVEN BEEN A FULL DAY YET [zombie-brand-mindblown]

On a far more serious note, I would like to say something: I'm going to make a promise, right here and now.

I promise to both the community and myself that so long as it is in my power I will never delete this post.

This isn't just some game of show-and-tell anymore; this is a monument and archive to the stories of the players.

We come here, united under a common interest, not to be defined by where we come from, or what we were taught was right when we were kids, or what family we were born into, or what our overall lot in life was, whether financial, racial, ethnic, and everything in between. We come here to play as equals on the field of battle; to have fun. Through this game and the internet, we have breached social boundaries that have cost lives and resources that cannot be replaced. The reasoning for why is simple: In this place, you are neither rich, nor poor, nor male, nor female, nor Christian, nor Muslim, nor atheist, nor black, nor white, nor anything in between nor around anything I've mentioned. In this place, you are a profile picture and a user name.

That statement might not mean a lot to you or maybe even seem a little depressing, but don't think that way. That name doesn't belong to some high school dropout, or some piece of trash on the streets, or even some billionaire who somehow made it. That name belongs to a human being. These stories, though incredibly varied, all detail the same thing: The human experience. These are the stories of people who came to know this game and its community and through some avenue had their life changed because of it.

When I made this post, I intended it to just be for fun. After I saw the rapid influx of comments, I challenged myself to read every one. But now, looking on all of them, I realize that none have any more or less value than any of the others. Whether your reasoning be that your friend drew in a Zerg costume eating cake or that you're bad at League and play Rakan or that you just like early 90's hip hop; that's reason enough. These stories; your stories, are what bring us together today. Through some means or another, you found this game and started playing. You made up a name for yourself; perhaps you thought as hard as you would if you were actually renaming yourself, or perhaps you simply turned your head, saw something, and muttered a quick "eh, why not?" before filling in that little box.

You played a few games. Maybe you liked it, maybe you didn't. But you're here now, so this game must mean something to you. That's not the point, though. The point is that these names aren't just a way to show our unity, but also to embrace how we are different. Each of these names shows something that each of us carries with us; a medal of honor or a scar of war to show where we've been and how far we've come. Yes, we share the same intersection of our lives through this game, but we also come and go through different roads and walks of life. We have come together and shown the world who we are. Yes, we recognize that we may be rich, or poor, or male, or female, or Christian, or Muslim, or atheist, or black, or white, or anything in between or around anything I've mentioned. However, there is one thing we all have in common: We are the Summoners of the Rift. This is our battlefield, our society, our game.

In the early years of LoL, the champions that we played as today comprised the League of Legends. This lore has since been ruled to be no longer canonical, but today I would like to establish a new cannon, right here and now: We are the champions. We are the combatants of the Rift. We are the League of Legends.

I'll get off my soap box now; I probably took that far too seriously. However, seeing so many simple stories; only glimpses of the fabric woven into the greater scheme of life, touched me in a way I simply can't describe. Perhaps I simply feel refreshed at hearing something so basic and yet it is so much so that my brain is unable to handle it and I simply overthought it. Perhaps I've come to realize some deeper meaning to life on a sub-conscious level that I felt needed to be expressed. Whatever the case may be, one thing's for certain: This isn't just my post anymore. It belongs to us. That's why I made that promise; I could never delete this post in a million years because this isn't just a part of my story that I've made by creating this post. This is a culmination of our stories, which deserve to be immortalized for years to come. Remember that it is through these stories that we have accomplished the impossible.

I work at Walmart, and one of our cheesy processes with handling merchandise is called One Best Way.

Well, that process is super slow and tedious compared to the old one, so we started calling it One Best Gay out of blatant disrespect.

Behold my humor.

I used to use 'Valegra' which was the name of my Blackguard in Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (as voted on by my guildies) but wanted to have something more catchy and pronouncible when I started shoutcasting games. I really liked the idea of mixing my meme-love with the digital age so I thought 'why not take Candlejack and mix it with

My first username was Mr.Trianglez. This is a super old personal meme I had with a few friends. I'd always say that triangles were the superior shape because they make up every other shape, and that circles were pointless (cuz they have no corners)

Then I changed it to 9 tailed waifu, cuz I was an ahri main. After getting about 5000 rp worth of free skins because people thought I was a girl, I changed it to something more clever.

and this one is because latin is pretty cool and stuff

The Aggronaut7/26/2017, 3:53:05 PM9 votes

In World of Warcraft, I usually used to play Tanks whose job was to make sure that the mobs hit him and not the rest of your teammates. This is known as maintaining 'Aggro'. In League of Legends I love to play bruisers and the word 'Juggernaut' always sounded cool to me. So finally, I just put two and two together and came up with 'Aggronaut' :D

BLACK REALM GOD7/26/2017, 3:12:39 PM8 votes

i used to like dragons. dragons appear in fantasy. i got made fun of for liking fantasy and so i started looking for something that seemed more adult than dragons. i became depressed and suicidal as a teen. i started to question life and death and morality among other things. after a while it became more and more interesting to me. death is something that usually happens to older people so it has a mature concept to it. i noticed the grim reaper was depicted as a skeleton. skeletons are part of fantasy and death. someone showed me league. i started looking through the character roster for a champion i liked. i saw karthus's bio and his R and thought it was really interesting and powerful looking. i started trying to come up with a cool sounding name that had to deal with death and power over others. EVERY. NAME. WAS. TAKEN. so i settled for black realm god. now people think i'm a realm god that's black instead of the realm being dark and deary. the amount of racists jokes and insults i get sometimes is just silly. perhaps i should have put "god of the black relam"? though it's probably too long of a phrase.

The Ender Cobra7/26/2017, 6:32:28 PM6 votes

TheEnderCobra Since, I was just a little noob I have always had an admiration of snakes. The way that they moved without appendages and the fact that they were so uncommon (at least where I lived) led me to research more about snakes. Time passed I had my own Ball Python which I took good care of and spent time with, until he got to the end of his lifespan and died at a healthy age of 34 (I got him from someone else at which point he was already 27), and since then snakes have always held a special place in my heart. When my brother showed my a funny song by a guy named Tobuscus, which was about nuggets and biscuits, I searched the rest of his channel for other good content he made which led to my discovery of Minecraft, Time Passed for some reason in minecraft I was better than my friends at killing endermen which led to them being my favorite mob in the game. No sob story there, just enjoyed killing them. At one point I thought about potentially starting a career/hobby on youtube and my first thought was 'alright, time to think of a cool name' so I typed in 'The Ender Lord' X Sorry, that name has been taken, please choose another. :'( 'The Ender Snake' X Sorry, that name has been taken, please choose another. https://ih0.redbubble.net/image.309824431.4726/st%2Csmall%2C215x235-pad%2C210x230%2Cf8f8f8.lite-1.jpg 'The Ender Cobra' ? Welcome to youtube And now use that (or Snake857) for all my usernames/in-game-names

I had no idea what I wanted for a name, so I said to myself "The very next thing I see will be my name." and the very next thing I saw was an ad for a game series I liked. The main character's name was Neptune. I would have went back on my word, but a little later, my friend got mad at me (for what, I don't remember.) and threw her library book at my face. The last thing I saw before it hit me, in big silver letters, was "The Son Of Neptune"

  1. I originally played DotA when it was a Warcraft 3 TFT Mod. I played Akasha almost exclusively with a little bit of Lina too. Pays tribute to both of them.
  2. Morgana is the reason I joined and stuck to League of Legends. Smartcasting eventually spoiled me to where I wouldn't go back to DotA (even after Valve bought it out).
  3. If I have the choice, I will play a female character.
  4. I refuse to play flat chested females (see Jinx).

Is that good enough?

I like dashes

zero3567/27/2017, 1:49:42 PM5 votes

Zero because I was watching/had just finished watching Code Geass at the time and League was/"is" a strategy game, so it fit 356 because zero was taken, so I needed a number. Rather than a random number, I chose the number of days in a year It was like a month later that I realized I had fucked up.

Toa of Death7/27/2017, 12:13:15 AM5 votes

Growing up, my favorite toy line/book series was a little Lego product called Bionicle. The characters looked cool and the story was honestly kinda dark for a kids series. Basically, the God of this universe(Mata Nui) was put into a coma by basically Satan(Makuta) and God was slowly dying. The Toa were the heroes of this universe, usually 6 at a time and each with the power of a specific element/element form( i.e ice and stone were their own elements). Way down the line a "Toa of Life" was eventually introduced to the story. It was just a mask for a majority of the story til then, Mask of Life. I always thought it would be cool if there had been a "Toa of Death" character but there never was one before the whole thing came to an end. I pretty much took the title as username ever since I thought of it and use it for everything.

The God of Cakes7/26/2017, 7:53:57 PM4 votes

I used to play a lot of Star Craft with some friends, being the Zerg player of the 5 of us (we were 3 Terran players, 1 Zerg and 1 Protoss). One of my friends wanted to be a comic artist and decided to draw each of us with our favorite race. For some reason he drew me in a Zerg costume eating cake. I still have no idea why he made me eat cake. I don't even remember my name before that, but I changed it to "Zergs eating cake" (I have the best imagination). When Minecraft became a thing we started to play it a bunch, and I build myself a castle, being dubbed "The King of Cakes" by my friends, keeping the cake theme. We shifted permanently over to League at around season 3 (we had already tried it in season 1), and started a sort of clan, using the chat rooms back then, calling it "Realm of The Great Cake", again, keeping the cake theme as it had kinda grown into our thing, with some of the others also having cake related names. Because I was the first to take the name of something with cake, I got 'promoted' to being the God of this new realm, thus The God of Cakes was born.

Sadly, none of these old friends of mine play anymore, but the Legacy of The Great Cake lives on with me.
