As you guys know, I love doing contests and giving away free skins/champions!

So here I am, back with another inspired by the recent release of the Arcade Skins ~

This one is simple. Rules are as follow!

. . . .

Le Rules

  1. Post your favorite retro video game character and explain why they inspire you! (This does NOT have to be a League champion. Any retro video game character!)

  2. Entries must at least be 3-5 sentences!

  3. Write the word 'banana' at the end of your entry so I know you read the rules.

  4. Just kidding, write the word 'apple'.

  5. Trick rule, I hate fruit. Don't write anything.

  6. Trick trick rule, I love fruit. Put 'pineapple' at the end of your entry. (Seriously. This one only.)

  7. Bonus points for pictures! ~ . . . .

Le Winners

I shall pick three (3) winners! Per usual, ONE winner for the most upvotes by the community, ONE winner for my personal choice and IF we hit at least 150 Upvotes, I'll select another RANDOM winner. Possibly more depending on how many upvotes we get.

UPDATE : Contest ends 9/4 12pm CST (Sorry! Holiday weekend, been caught up! Announcing winners tonight 9/6 !) . . . .

WINNERS ~

I get my inspiration from almost all friendly NPCs from old retro games. You can swing your sword through them, you can shoot arrows at their face, and hand them active bombs. They will be fine with it, even act like nothing happened at all. They all taught me that nothing matters and you can take anything that anyone throws at you and be k. . . . . . They also taught me to sit/stand and do nothing until someone talks to me. . . . . pictures! ~ . . . pineapple?

**Boards are Broken right now and won't let me go through the pages or expand the Chronological View, so I'll announce the other winner(s) as soon as Boards get fixed. :( **

Well alas! Let's ze games begin!

**HEY GUYS! SO SORRY ABOUT THE CONTEST!

I just got out of surgery so I've been out of commission for over a month. :( I haven't been working or receiving any income while I've been in the hospital either, so I haven't been able to really keep up with any of this! I just started working again, so I'll be back to holding contests soon and of course, making the prizes even better for all of those who waited so patiently!

Again I'm truly sorry and definitely glad to be on the road to recovery. :) **

The "I AM ERROR" guy from The Legend of Zelda 2: Link's Adventure.

http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/zelda/images/4/49/Error.png/revision/latest?cb=20100522011509

Look at this guy. He's the most inspiring video game character of all time, imo. Look at how he stands there. Such confidence. Look at his luxurious beard. Such grace. Look at the beautiful bricks his house is composed of. Rent is only $100 per month.

https://media.dayoftheshirt.com/images/shirts/kNGxP3yxFnyW/theyetee_i-am-error.full.png

He has the courage to get up in the morning, stand up, and wait for Link to come into his house. He knows it will happen because it happens every day. And when it does happen, He know what Link wants to do. Smash pots. Steal money. Paint his walls vomit green. The menace. But everyday, he stands confident. He looks Link in the eye and delivers a message that strikes fear into his heart. "I AM ERROR" And with that, Link is off.

http://thestudentreview.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/IAE-logo.jpg

Truly an inspiration, ERROR shows us that we can't live our lives being pushed around and beat up and having walls painted vomit green. We need to stand up for ourselves and confront those who insist on doing those kinds of things.

Especially people who paint your walls vomit green.

Why would anyone do that like seriously

(Oh, and I'm not sure if you can request a skin for in case you win the contest, but if you can, I'd like Arcade Hecarim please :D)

My favourite game while growing up was Ice Climber on the NES. I don't really know this character's name. We kinda made it into a VS game wherein me and my brother would race to the top. If you were left behind, you lose a life. This game gave us hours of fun. We learned that you gotta be fast or get left behind. Simple but great.

I was Inspired by the Bug Trainer from Pokemon. He gave no fucks what so ever about what people thought about him and his bug Pokemon. Like me, people made fun of him for being weird, but he didn't care. I learned from him that as long as you believe in what you do, and do what you love, no ones words can hurt you "I'm a Bug Catcher Hear me Roar" Viridian forest bug catcher 2 Pineapple

First of all, I'd like to say that I'm not a 'retro kid' or anything like that by any means. The most 'retro' console that I probably ever owned was the Nintendo Gamecube as a kid. However, I loved playing on my Nintendo Gamecude, and there was one game I particularly enjoyed, even if I didn't get very far in it.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5e/Lmbox.jpg

In case you don't know, Luigi's Mansion was a game in which the Nintendo Mascot's younger brother wins a mansion in a contest that he didn't even sign up for. Nevertheless, Mario goes to the mansion to have a look around, and Luigi arrives later on. Long story short, the mansion is haunted, Mario goes missing, and using nothing more than a flashlight and a vaccum-cleaner converted ghost-busting machine Luigi has to brave the mansion and rescue his brother.

Anyway, as I think back to when I was playing that game, I realized one thing that sets Luigi apart from most of the other heroes mentioned in this thread. Namely, the fact that Luigi is afraid. If you think about it, whilst heroes like Mario or Link seem pretty brave, they're brave in the sense that they're simply not afraid of the challenges ahead. Meanwhile, Luigi is literally SHITTING himself all the time throughout Luigi's Mansion. He's walking around with chattering teeth and shaking knees, and despite all of that he doesn't go back and leg it from the mansion. Because he wants to save his brother. He presses on, even though he's incredibly scared, for Mario. And for me, conquering your fears is a far greater act of bravery than simply not being afraid in the first place.

Luigi's Mansion is, as far as I know, probably one of the not-so-numerous games that feature Luigi as the main protagonist. He's usually a sidekick to Mario, and is generally considered the 'lesser brother'. However, I am inspired by Luigi because although he's not as famous or strong as Mario, he comes through as a hero when needed. And I don't know about you, but I believe that true heroes shun the spotlight.

It might not be "retro" enough, but it's still got a place in my heart... http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hBsWA3d2Yv8/TdzlNfZD8iI/AAAAAAAAAA0/cqEy6-uZLDI/s1600/starcraft1.jpg Starcraft 1 Marines

Rough little guys got their fair share of cinematics, artwork, and were just so satisfying to use. Their voice overs were fun, their attacks sounded cool, and despite them dying by the hundreds in custom game modes I still never got tired of that scream.

I wonder if any of them ever tasted a pineapple

My favorite retro video game character is Nina Williams from Tekken. She is hawt and also has an awesome storyline in the Tekken games. Her iconic catsuit makes me blush and plus, the Tekken games are always a treat to play.

My favorite retro game character is Kain Highwind from Final Fantasy IV. Probably the most bad-ass character in the game, and my basis of an anti-hero. His character development was also probably one of the best in the game.

I think the word you're searching for is pineapple!

Randi (the "canon" name for the main character you can otherwise name yourself) from the SNES game Secret of Mana is my favorite, and most inspirational, video game character.

This guy gets the short end of the stick. The only main character not to get magic in a game called Secret of Mana, banished from his village he grew up in without parents only because he got stuck in the wilderness and used a sword (that was a seal at the time) to get home in the first place, his father is dead and his mother is a tree (and dies), gets conned in the game, and this guy still decides to be a hero despite all the crap. It takes a thick skin to get back up when life knocks you down, but it takes a huge heart to defend a world that wasn't fair to you since birth. Now that's a hero.

Link, from The Legend of Zelda. Even if it's a retro game, there's a story. A story about a young man who never lost hope. He fought through eight or nine dungeons, finding treasure and slaying monsters along the way, before he finally confronted the great evil and saved the princess. I picked Link because he's the main character of the only retro game I've ever beaten. Pineapple.

I don't know who to choose from Cave Story since all of the characters give me the same feeling of nostalgia of how games used to be and how good the characters were. All of the people are quite creative since a robot, rabbit-thing, evil toasters and massive monsters are pretty interesting. Even though the game isn't as popular as say Mario or Link, it has it's own positives and not too many negatives. The game inspires me to have lots of creativity and tokeep on thinking.

I found that the retro that inspires me the most is Kirby from, well, the Kirby series! http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/kirby/images/f/f1/Paint.png/revision/latest?cb=20110622031521&path-prefix=en Now I know what you're thinking, how does a pink puffball inspire someone? Well, for one he seems to always be positive. He always finds the good in every situation. No matter what the problem is, he finds a way to get past it. He could be unable to take abilities from enemies by inhaling them like in Kirby Super Star's Milky Way Wishes, or being turned in to yarn and finds himself unable to inhale enemies at all like in Kirby's Epic Yarn! That's why I love Kirby, he's creative, he's fun, he's positive, and most of all, he's too cute! Pineapple

My favorite retro video game character is Dart Feld from Legend of Dragoon. Throughout the story of the game he is from he experiences many tragic moments, his village being destroyed at a young age causing the loss of his family, the death of a new friend, a traitorous father (there is a deus ex machina), and a perceived ally that ends up being the one that kills the friend. Yet throughout this journey of hardships, he still maintains an honorable, respectable (and goofy) character. Even when he has the murderer at the edge of his sword at the end of the third disc, willing to pay for his actions with his life, he forgives him and states that it won't bring the friend back...After punching his face with an armored arm. He matures throughout this whole journey that ends up with the goal being to save the world, with it all starting from saving his childhood friend (and later romantic love intrest) from being a POW. I still love this game to this day and play it every few months, and I hope I shed some light on this awesome character and game

My favorite character would be Brad from Lisa. Yes, I know that this is not a retro game, but it feels so similar to games like EarthBound, that to me it feels the same.

http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/lisa-rpg/images/6/60/Brad.png/revision/latest?cb=20150111114247

This man has been through a lot. From living in an abusive household by his father, Brad had always been a downer in life. From the start of game, you see that Brad has been on this anti-depressant called Joy, which he takes to get away from the memories that haunt him of his Father, and little sister. But it all changes when he finds this little baby girl, alone and abandoned.

WARNING: To tell how he inspires me, there are some spoilers. You've been warned

Suddenly, this man who was depressed found purpose in raising this girl, keeping her safe in a world that would abuse her for her body (All the women disappeared or something). He even throws the rest of his Joy pills off a cliff, in an attempt to be a better father. But it all changes when the Girl, who he named Buddy, is kidnapped.

Brad embarks on this soul-wretching journey, to save Buddy from being abused by men. Even if it's for repopulation, Brad knows that she isn't ready for any of this, and begins his way to find her. Throughout the game, he fights off perverts, gang members, weird flesh mutants, and hallucinations while accumulating friends and allies to help him along the way.

Nearing the end of the game, Brad is forced to make decisions. Decisions that end up hurting Buddy, the little girl he loves as a daughter, to the point where she becomes afraid oh him, using a boat to get away. Brad pursues onward, regardless, where he finds her in safety with one of the gangs, whose leader turns out to be an old student of Brads from his past. Rando, w/e his name was again, swears her safety but Brad doesn't care at this point.

Brad then proceeds to fight his own party members, some of them just worried for his well being, and an entire freaking army of 20 people BY HIMSELF, followed by the Boss of Rando. During it, Brad becomes more and more like some of the flesh mutants that he'd face throughout the game, ignoring damage, screaming, crying, yelling out for someone who isn't there. It's saddening to find this man fall into madness.

Throughout this battle, Brad takes multiple wounds, but is able to limp his way towards Buddy, where he says his last few words.

"Did I do the right thing?"

He falls over dead right after, unable to hear Buddy's answer.

Epilogue over, Brad inspires me because of his unwavering love for his adopted daughter, Love that made him kill and fight countless people and mutants to find his way to her, to make sure she was safe. This relentless pursuit to make sure that Buddy was safe, not to be abused by others for anything. The love Brad shows for Buddy, is undeniable the most touching thing I had seen in this ruined world, filled with nothing but selfish men, and it inspires me to be just like that.

Waaaaaario! Hehe, everyone posts Mario, but no one realizes who the true gentleman of the past is. Wario is utterly charismatic, portrays true sportsmanship, and can fart better than anyone I know. Wario's many a minigame's have always kept me entertained hours on end, and how could you not chose this character in Mario Party? Wario is the best character on Sm4sh simply because he has free transportation. This character is me, retro style. El pineapple

I quite like Simon Belmont. The whole family has a very cool story behind them, but the idea of one man storming into a castle full of monsters to take out a baddie is awesome to me; and he's done it more than once as well. (Though I think Super Castlevania IV was more of a remake than a sequel). His whip was super interesting, compared to Marios...you know, feet. The enemies were designed interestingly, the levels were great, and holy hell the music was amazing. I felt like a true bad ass running through a castle dressed in a dress and not giving a fuck.

My role-models are Blade and Stryker from Bad Dudes! because they beat ninjas up by punching them in the fists and kicking them in the feet, reminding me that the most satisfying way of overcoming adversity is by meeting it head on and prevailing against the most difficult odds! :P plus it's really cool to jump around on top of freightliners on an epic quest to rescue the president and go eat a hamburger with him once this is all done!

I'd have to say Noob Saibot from Mortal Kombat would be my favorite retro game character. There's just something ridiculously satisfying about playing as a character that looks like a ninja and has cool magic to help him butcher his enemies. He manipulates his shadows and magic in ways that truly fit his whole "ninja-phantasm-thing" he has goin' on. Zed (one of my favorite champions, not just because of his strength, but the whole concept behind him) was based partially off of him and he can do all sorts of crazy things like send out a shadow to flip an opponent into the air, open a portal and have his shadow drag the opponent down it partially and then close it (FATALITY), etc. etc.

He heavily inspires me just because of his general badass-ery. Like, who wouldn't want to have all of the amazing powers he has? While he's a wraith and is somewhat evil, but that doesn't change the fact that he's amazing. He used to the original Sub-Zero and is a perfect example of how drastically people can change, no matter who you are, everything will change when the Fire Nation attacks. pineapple

For me, it would have to be The best villain of all Final Fantasy: Kefka Palazzo.

This monster of a villain destroys the entire world, just because he's bored, and his dialogue makes him an enjoyable villain throughout the game.

My favorite retro video game character would have to be Cidolfas Orlandu from Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1). His determination and willingness to be branded a traitor to his former nation because he disagreed with the way it was heading was a true inspiration during my childhood. One of the strongest and most capable warriors in his world of Ivalice, he used his strength to fight for what was right and to protect the people that were being mislead by the evil and corrupt leadership of not just two nations, but also the leaders of the primary religion of the world. After everything that happens, he is willing to go so far as to sacrifice his own life in the name of justice and whats right. He was a truly inspiring character that inspired me creatively for over a decade now, and has been used for naming my characters in everything from Pokemon to World of Warcraft.

Donkey Kong, since he is incredibly persistent with the art of barrel-throwing, and has passed his legacy onto his son, Diddy, showing his father-figure side. Also, he began as the Villain in the first Donkey Kong game, and has since been seen as the hero in more recent titles, suggesting he is a changed Donkey (or Gorilla). Diddy Kong can be seen in many titles, no doubt helped and made famous with the support of his father. . . . . Pineapple

http://www.gametrailers.com/side-mission/files/2012/07/Gordon-Freeman-Face.jpg

Ginger hair, thick-rimmed glasses, a tidy goatee and a Ph.D. degree in Theoretical Physics - Gordon Freeman was never your average gun-totting FPS hero. However, after only two Half-Life games (and a couple of expanded episodes), Freeman has become a gaming icon, synonymous with the apotheosis of first-person action.

The character is the quintessential geek fantasy: a first class, card-carrying uber nerd who's thrust into the breach and forced to fend off an inter-dimensional invasion as well as squads of well-armed government goons - not something the average MIT graduate expects on his first day at work. He's a far cry from the muscular machismo and implausibly proportioned heroes who traditionally make up the genre; in Freeman Valve managed to create one of the most unlikely heroes in gaming, while simultaneously one of the most believable. Original designs - which, fans have dubbed 'Ivan the Space Biker' - had Gordon sporting a full beard and pony tail, but his eventual look came from the various faces of Valve employees, giving him the authentic geek chic we've come to know and love.

It would be a disservice to Freeman's laconic charm to say he's void of personality due to never uttering a word - or being directly seen, save for the box art and glimpses in sister titles Opposing Force and Blue Shift. In keeping Freeman mute and unseen, Valve cannily laid the groundwork for a character that players can fully embody, enabling each would-be Freeman to shape Gordon's persona themselves.

There's a bit of Gordon in all of us, you see: noble, mischievous, intelligent and, beneath it all, a kick-ass action hero bubbling beneath the surface. Given a dozen third-person cut scenes and lines of snappy dialogue, Gordon Freeman may not be half the icon he is today. As it stands, he effortlessly sets the benchmark for aiming protagonists and accomplishes it all in complete silence, with a crowbar in hand.

I pull a lot of inspiration from a couple old characters, but if I had to pick one that definitely sealed the deal for me, I'd say it's Link, from the Legend of Zelda. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPhfbtjqWM8

Link as a character, is quite an oddball pick for inspiration, since a lot of people don't take much from his character at all, lumping him in with just another silent protagonist and a run of the mill hero. These people fail to understand, however, some deeper elements of storytelling. Link, as a character, represents the idea that so long as victory is possible, you will find a way. This idea resonates to the very core of his actions, down to the heart of how he fights, with his head, not his brawn,, acquiring mementos and trinkets of the areas and people he encounters... All of these are important elements of him and his journeys across the lands. However...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qJ-xEZhGms One inspiring aspect of his character lies in the tiny triangle in his hand. He stands as a beacon against overwhelming darkness, a bastion of courage amidst a broken world. His refusal to give in, to lay down and die, to let the world he's known fall to darkness is what overcomes evil. Not his power, not his intellect, no prior training, merely the strength of spirit and unshakable conviction to push through it all. This unshakable resolve is reflected thrice over in his equipment.

The unbreakable Hylian Shield, capable of turning nearly any blow. And of course, The Master Sword, the blade of evil's bane, forged from the blessings of seven ancient creators of the world and their patron war goddess Hylia specifically to push back the tide of evil that would one day come.

With his tools, with his wits, with his completely mundane self beyond what great task Destiny lays before him, merely hoping he will accept, he chooses to venture forth into the darkness of the world, which leads me to my final point....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o78T9-I4OGA You. Link is partially meant to be an extension of you, the player. It's your courage, your wits, your will that saves the day. This is inspiring for a number of reasons, but I would say the biggest one is that in the end, for what it's worth, you not giving up on him is you not giving up on yourself. You learn through the experience, especially if you started when you were young, that you can overcome adversity in your life, in a real way. Because... you know he won't give up, so you don't give up on him. Since he's a reflection of yourself, this means... inspiringly enough, he doesn't give up on YOU. Through all your foibles and flops, he stands as resolute as ever for you to give it another go. He'll always be there, ready for adventure whenever you are, and though you can't always expect endless new adventures with him, you can carry with you the spirit of courage and the experiences you've had in your adventures in real life.

That's something you can take with you. That's the mark of a good character, and of a good story. :)

I guess I probably could word this better if I tried, but hey, it's a forum post. I hope y'all enjoy it.

I almost forgot to say Pineapple. Whoops. Well I did it.

So I don't know how 'retro' you want but mine would have to be Carth Onasi from Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic. I put an UNGODLY amount of time into the original KoTOR, I beat it AT LEAST 4 times and I ALWAYS had this guy by my side. Basically he's the guy who's supposed to be protecting the main jedi in the game, his entire planet was wiped out by the Sith empire and his story and background are both really well done. The reason he inspires me is because even though he watched LITERALLY his entire planet get slaughtered by Sith he still carries on, strong willed, ready to fight and die by your side(after you earn his trust of course) and I just think thats a really heavy burden to live with, something I could never do. Also his voice actor is fantastic. I salute you friend! PINEAPPLE

My Favorite Retro Character would have to be Mega Man! Not only does he look awesome, the games where always challenging and even though I wasn't that skilled at it, it always ended my day with a smile even after raging at my TV. I really thank Capcom even though I am a Nintendo fan myself but Mega Man was one of the few first games I played (right after Super Mario bros) that got me into gaming. Yes I have more Mario games then mega man now but I still fit in time to play mega man even if its outdated!
