A look at Janna's poor autoattack range

Janna has an autoattack range that doesn't seem to fit her character nor the role she is played in. At 475, her autoattack range is the shortest of all mage supports and of the common mages played bottom, only Morgana has less range. However Morgana has a range of 1300 on Dark Binding (50 mana) and 900 on Tormented Soil (70 mana). Janna's Howling Gail, despite having potentially longer range costs a whopping 90 mana at level 1, making it impractical to use very often. That leaves her with only Zephyr, a 600 range ability.

Point being, Janna's poor autoattack range is an unfair disadvantage. It puts her in more danger than her peers when she uses it to poke/kite/harass/etc. It is not uncommon for her to take damage before she is even in range to use her AA. Being a fragile/squishy champion, this puts her at real risk.

To me, this seems unnecessary. Her AA range could be increased (not necessarily to 550, but something higher than 475) to put her on a more level ground without making her presence to strong. I find myself too often being forced to retreat before my AA animation can even complete (or at least get far enough along to even do damage) or else risk taking too much damage from simple poking at early levels.

Janna- 475 Nami- 550 Soraka- 550 Sona- 550 Lulu- 550

Morgana- 450 Annie- 625 Zyra- 575 Karma- 525 Nid- 525

She has a shorter range than all adc's with the exception of Urgot.

Opinions/Comments? This is fairly common knowledge among people who actively play support, but I have yet to see it addressed as to why she has less AA range than her mage-support peers.

Edit: Made some clarifications. Thanks for the input!

I believe that Janna's short auto-attack range balances her late-game range out, in comparison to some other mage supports. Yes Nami may have a longer one, however her Q is harder to land/set up. In comparison, Janna is able to easily harass her opponents with her Q, potentially knocking up an entire team with its range and width. Giving her more range with her auto-attack will increase her poke-potential, but it may also make her a bit too powerful.

Janna isn't a harass support. She is a defensive disengager support with her Howling Gale knockup and her Ultimate knockback, along with her shield and slow. If you choose to harass, you are just waiting to get engaged on because your knockup is gone and has a lengthy cooldown and high mana cost. If you want to harass, put your shield on your ADC and let him AA or harass with their abilities. The added bonus AD will make them stronger than the enemy ADC. (Max your shield first, then W, then Q) Your q is used mainly for its utility rather than its damage, again because of its high mana cost and it is really easy to dodge.

Usually those aa's work out well in the end I have no issue especially you have the knockup, slow, shield, heal, and flash in which the low atk range does balance her out in the late game.

Janna autoattacks is balance because her E. If janna will have 550 attack range, she become automatic my favorite supp. I think however she need 500 indeed.

Currently, Janna has a great late game. This champion need more love I think.

I agree, her range is unsuited for her, and it might give her the boost she needs in viability.

500 is best, but anything over even 520 is pushing it.

There are several reasons why Janna cannot have 550 attack range. She has more movespeed with her passive and W to be able to get in and out with an auto before most people could react. Furthermore, she has an ability that can grant her bonus AD as well as protecting from any retaliation. I do, however, think that 475 is too short for her role as mainly a disengage support. She could work extremely well in siege comps if she could ever auto the turret from a safe range. Her range definitely has to stay less than that of most ADC's, or else she will bring overbearing lane presence and zoning powers to bot lane.

I don't think an attack range buff is right for Janna, but I would really like it if they would finally give Janna some way to act aggressively in lane.

As others have said her general pattern right now is completely reactive/disengage, and the only "offense" you have is the AD buff you give to your carry. The problem I have with this is it makes the Janna player completely dependent on the ADC following through in order to be remotely effective.

What I would recommend for Janna would be to make her Q do reduced damage to minions/monsters (to prevent solo lane Janna abuse) and then give that ability some damage back.

This would allow Janna to make aggressive plays (as long as she was smart about it) without turning her into a poke/harass support. I would also fix another one of her issues--right now there is no meaningful reward for charging up your Q (the damage bonus is so small I'm really not sure why it's even there)

i think its pretty stupid tbh if any supports should have low range it should be the ones with sustain not the one without i honestly think its jsut a design flaw riot chooses to over look
