Seeing a TON of non-traditional supports lately

It seems when playing, I've been seeing supports that are outside of the ordinary and end up just getting zoned/out-laned because of it. Any ideas how to counteract that? My recent games I've seen:

Varus/Morgana Nidalee/Cho'gath Miss Fortune/Nocturne Kayle (ADC)/Xin Zhao

Is this in ranked?

If not, you do see the darndest things in normals, not that that is a bad thing.

If so, then I'm only mildly surprised, and really only at xin zhao support. My guess is that the reason more and more unorthodox supports fill the role is due to the fact that they outperform the the traditional supports at their own job. Why that is could be a couple of things:

  1. Supports are simply too weak to compete, outside of thresh, sona, with Janna and Nami seen rarely.

  2. ADC's don't really need heals as much, so much as they need CC. Which is why morg, cho, nocturne, and xin zhao are being seen more in that light. It is because their CC is better in one way or another. Fiddles is down there because he can fear, and his drain auto-zones.

Either way, Riot has seen that supports need help, and they are addressing the role as a whole. I just hope that when they do, they can rebuff some of the traditional supports to match the powerlevel of other champions again, at least in their main role.

You complain just because you haven't seen the massive amounts of Teemo Top being played lately...

Have one yourself, watch them feed and rage, and then you'll know suffering...

I've been seeing cass support, annie support and ahri support..i'm not too thrilled about them lol.

But I think varus/morg is pretty common. I would run lux support and ashe or graves as adc maybe.

Nid/Cho seems like it's just going to throw off the mind to lane against, but if you dodge nids spears you should be fine. I would run sona/cait against it and just ward so you know where cho is so you dont get caught in a silence or knockup.

MF/Noc I wouldn't be worried about at all. Noc isn't that scary until lvl 6, but his ult in lane isn't bad since you see him on screen when he activates it. Just play like nami or sona with any adc that runs good against MF.

As for Kayle/Xin, I have no idea. I've seen it before, and I've seen kayle adc, kayle support, and xin support and xin adc. It really just throws me off, which makes me lose the early lane phase but as long as you stay a distance from kayle you should be alright. I would probably just run Cait if she is open with any support that has sustainability.

That's just my thoughts though.

Kill lanes are difficult because they are such an odd match up. The best thing you can do is be on top of your game. Ward well and try to keep vision in your favor. Lanes like this will likely push like crazy, make sure your jungler can gank bot freely to help give you relief.

Just play safe and smart and ultimately you should have a better comp late game because you'll generally have more CC/utility than them because you have a dedicated support.

you will have a hard time countering kill lanes with traditional methods. the best thing to do is fall back and farm under turret with jangles support.

alternatively, you can lane swap like the pro's do. it can really turn an unfavorable match up to a free farm/push lane especially if they don't respond with it the way they ought to. the disadvantage of not having a duo bot lane evaporates in solo queue because most teams won't take advantage of the lack of presence bottom. it's a legit tactic for a reason and it's a little disappointing to not see folks actually try the tactics that you see in the pro's
