How Does Ranked Work

Hey guys! I just reached level 30 and began playing some ranked games, but I have no idea how the games I play effect my rank. From what I've learned your rank is based on win/lose. However, I am wondering if your kda effects your rank at all. I pose this question because I play a lot of support and 2/3 times I win my lane, but the rest of the team throws the game. Ergo, does your kda effect your rank? Also, any other tips or explanations of the ranked system would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and have a great day :D

To get a general idea of how you are rated in ranked play, you can check out the League of Legends wiki here:

http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/League_system

It details how your wins and losses help or harm you depending on your performance. This does not, however, mean that your rating is based on your KDA. You can go 0/9/15 and win and gain the same amount of League Points as going 19/0/20 and winning.

Check out the Season 3 FAQ for some basic information on Ranked play.

For the sake of illustration, let’s take the hypothetical (and non-existent) player Steve McQueen. Steve completes his placement matches and falls into division three of the Silver tier. He’s then placed into the Katarina’s Assassins league with up to 250 other Silver tier players, since he’s already got three friends who are competing there. Based on their skill level, these players are evenly distributed across the five Silver tier divisions, so Steve’s league contains around 50 players in each division. When Steve acquires 100 League Points by winning ranked games, he’ll have the opportunity to play a Division Series to move up. If he were already in division one, he’d get to play a Promotion Series to break into a new league in the Gold tier.

Generally, ranked works like this:

You advancement is based solely on whether you win or lose the game. Sometimes, if the servers are having trouble and Loss Prevented is enabled, you will win or lose less LP than normal.

Unfortunately, a large chunk of ranked games are decided by people going AFK, ragequitting, trolling, or just flaming so hard that the team can't play well any more. There is no compensation for this. You just need to win consistently more games to overcome the random variance of toxic players.

What I think is what the OP is really asking isn't how rank works, but how the system works.

The best way to show you is a thing called MMR (Match Make Rating)

Based on how well you do in your games, your MMR will either go up or down. In season 3, Riot would push down the LP or increase your LP based on how well or not so well your MMR was at the point of the division.

Season 4 however, Riot has removed the Division 1 clamping which was basically saying that MMR justifies for you being in Division 1 regardless and they wont hold you back. In season 3 it could take you 15-20 games to just get out of the Division and then do best of 5. In season 4, you are looking at 5-6 games and best of 5 series; if your good at carrying or lucky.

Another portion about MMR: Just because you win, doesn't mean your MMR will go up. If you go 1/10/3 in a game (Kills/Deaths/Assists), your MMR will go down, even though you won.

So try to not feed and try to get assists or kills to keep your MMR up.

If you go into your summoner profile in the client, go to the leagues tab, and look at the bottom right corner of that window, there's a link that says 'More about the league system'.

IDK if that'll help you, but it's something.
