@Riot: 5v5 Matchmaking and Divisions

I know I won't get a comprehensive answer on this because I know Riot wants to keep all of their matchmaking information private, which I understand, but I do have a question.

My ranked team has recently been going up against teams that make very little sense to us.

Information:

  1. My team is currently Bronze 2. It is made up of a Bronze 5, Silver 5, Silver 5, Gold 4, and Gold 5.

  2. The two most recent teams we played were Bronze 2 and Bronze 1.

  3. The Bronze 2 team was made up of Silver 5, Gold 4, Plat 3, Silver 5, and Silver 1.

  4. The Bronze 1 team was made up of a Silver 2, Plat 4, Silver 3, Silver 5, and Plat 3.

  5. Using various sites like LolNexus and others, all of their MMRs were considerably higher than ours from both an overall Team MMR perspective AND individual MMRS.

Disclaimer: I know the MMRs listed on these sites are not entirely accurate.

Looking at this info, I'm confused as to how we are getting paired against these teams. Yes, I understand that, division-wise, we are similar. That makes sense.

But when you compare everything else, we are definitely outmatched as far as MMRs and individual divisions are concerned. In both games our highest division player was not equal to theirs, and our lowest was far below theirs.

If you tried to "average" our divisions, I doubt they would be close.

In short, how does this keep happening? Why are Silver and recently Gold players getting paired with Plats? It just doesn't add up to me.

I am pretty sure that ranking in solo queue does not determine your MMR n ranked 5s.

Maybe your team coordination was better such that you collectively punch above your solo queue weight?

I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain sites like LolNexus calculate team MMR's based on combined individual MMR, so that way you can get some kind of estimate in solo que.

League's Ranked 5's matchmaking however, as BuboBubo put it, is completely separate from solo MMR. So the MMR you're seeing on Lolnexus and others is actually much different from what the Lolclient is seeing and can make they're team seem much farther away than they actually are.

After many tickets and hours of play I am petty sure the only time that soloQ MMR is even taken into consideration for ranked 5's is during placement. Once placed it is solely based on the team MMR. This means that as long as you are out of placement matches you are being matched against teams with similar ranked 5's MMR to your team. One must keep in mind that just because a team is made up of plats gold silvers or bronzors does not mean they will be able to coordinate and work well together. They obtained their MMR the same way you did.

So I guess the tl/dr is that the individual MMR's do not reflect the teams MMR.
