LCS London - missing Gambit

Gambit Gaming’s core line-up is going to miss the fifth stage of LCS EU Summer that takes place in London from June 21st to June 22nd. The reason behind it is that four Russian players cannot get a visa to Great Britain.

It takes from three to six weeks for Russian citizens to acquire this visa, and, on top of that, players don’t have a chance to go abroad during this period, since they have to leave their foreign passports in a consulate.

To our surprise, we found out about LCS taking place in London only from an official announcement published at leagueoflegends.com on May 22nd, meaning that the current split had already begun, even though Riot Games’ representatives should have notified us about it beforehand. In theory, we could have applied for an emergency visa that takes up to two weeks to be acquired, but in this case, we would have to miss two stages in Cologne. It is completely senseless to sacrifice two stages to attend one.

Organizing events like LCS London Roadtrip requires no less than a couple of months, therefore it is obvious that we are the innocent victims of organiziners’ careless actions. They failed to investigate how difficult and lengthy it is for Russian citizens to acquire visa to Great Britain. It is worth paying attention to that we could have acquired visa to Great Britain without any obstacles during the off-season (April 18th – May 19th), should we be informed about games taking place in London in due time.

We have approached Riot Games’ representatives with an inquiry to reschedule our games on a basis that we cannot travel to London due to their own lack of foresight, but our inquiry was declined. Should we skip LCS London Roadtrip, our team not only receives two default losses, but is also subject to severe penalties. In light of it, we are forced to resort to using four substitute players. Consequently, organizers’ careless actions have a negative impact not only on us, but, more importantly, on our fans, who paid for tickets and accommodation and changed their plans for this weekend in order to attend this event and support their favourite team.

It’s not the first instance of Riot Games putting us in a disadvantageous situation. We acknowledge that a decision to remake our match against SK and a refusal to reschedule LCS EU Spring Week 6 games can be considered questionable, but a given event is an indisputable failure of Riot Games.

We won’t hide that up until yesterday organizers were trying to remedy this situation and did their best to make it possible for us to travel to England, but, unfortunately, it was too late to find a viable solution. Essentially, acquiring visa is not an issue as long as it is addressed in good time.

As for our fans, who counted on meeting us in London, we can only express our condolences.

That´s just sad...and really careless from Riots side. Somehow all major failuresin LoL-esports seem to affect Gambit in a negative way. Please don´t fight a cold-war in lolesports, sport ismeant to bring people together in the first place.

Edit: for some reason it always bugs if i try to post it in the esports-section, so please move it there.

As requested I repost this from a EUW Forum thread. This topic need more light on it.

After reading Gambits statement about the whole London LCS issue I am truly shocked to see how Riot just screwed Gambit.

If you didnt read it yet here's the link: http://gambit-gaming.com/en/article/366

Such an unfair treatment would not be acceptable in real sports and WE NEED TO show Riot that we dont accept it! What if Gambit is arround 5-7th place at the end of the split and every win matters in determinating if they have a chance to qualify for worlds?

Not only Gambit is screwed by Riot this week but also all the Gambit fans attending London LCS to see their favourite team play and maybe meet them in person.

It is now the second time Riot ****ed Gambit after they decided to remake a game because of a very unrelevant bug (Aatrox) because a Riot referee didnt do his job right. I think both teams and Reddit agreed afterwards that the bug was so unrelevant that a remake was not necessary. Now Riot is fine with Gambit playing even 2 complete games with a huge disadvantage (if you are honest they have 0.000% chance to win a game this weekend).

You can't honestly say that Riot doesn't know by now how difficult it is for the russians in Gambit to get visas. And even after Gambit approaches Riot and tells them they couldn't get visas because Riot didn't give them enough time, they refuse to make this a fair competition. It wouldn't be a problem to let them play online under supervision!

I mean it's one thing if this was just an oversight by Riot in the beginning to inform Gambit beforehand or them just not knowing how long it takes for russians to get visas to London. But refusing to work something out so Gambit can have a fair competition is just unprofessional, especially if Riot wants e-sports to be treated equally as other sports they have to be a serious and professional organisation.

And here´s the sort of statement from Riot:

My name is Jason “jasonoliver” Yeh and I’m the Head of EU eSports and the Riot Germany office. I’m working with fellow Rioters to bring the excitement of the LCS to as many fans as possible across Europe outside of the Cologne studio. I’m very disappointed to confirm that the core team of Gambit Gaming will not be present at LCS London due to visa issues.

Typically, UK visa applications take 4-6 weeks to process from Russia. Gambit Gaming was notified of LCS London near the end of the processing timeline. Despite this tight deadline and in the face of unexpected complications, we worked extensively with the team and did everything in our power to expedite the process of obtaining visas. We also investigated alternative options such as rescheduling or having Gambit play remotely from our Cologne studio. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons (e.g. security and connectivity risks, unfairness to other teams) none of these alternative solutions proved feasible. As a result, Gambit will be playing with 4 substitutes this weekend.

We’re truly sorry for this poor experience for Gambit Gaming and all the fans. We really wanted the core of Gambit's roster to be with us in London. We apologize for underestimating the difficulty Gambit Gaming would have in attending the LCS London event. We wish that we had informed the teams sooner about the roadshow so this would not have been an issue. Moving forward, we will prepare all teams for potential roadshow locations as early as possible in order to ensure such issues do not happen again.
