Skarner Suggestion: Maxed stacked Q applies a slow
Personally, I will admit I never got to learn the old Skarner very well, so here a my point of view and suggestion from someone without extensive knowledge of the previous Skarner. I am a Silver 4 player who has played a fair amount of Skarner jungle and top lane since the rework. I already had the champion, so I thought it would be a fun way to surprise people if I could learn his rework and play him in SoloQ.
I've watched videos and read comments to better familiarize myself with the former-Skarner and tried to understand why people loved him so much. Everyone is complaining about Skarner's inability to stick to champions like his former-self. From a game experience angle, Skarner certainly got the best reactions and result when he could get right on top of another champion. His new kit also benefits from sticking to your opponent thanks to the increased attack speed and magic damage, however, there is truth that his sticking power isn't as powerful as it used to be.
The rework, in my opinion, is a lot of fun and rewards landing your E. That slow lasts a long time. But I certainly don't feel like I "stick" to people. To compare Skarner's E and current pre-ult gank style, it is kind of like landing a Q from Mundo and running up with W on. Except Mundo's Q can be spammed, therefore technically lasting longer? I think you see this Riot and are working on ways to buff Skarner's pre-6 ganking. So here is my suggestion:
Crystal Slash
- Active: Skarner deals physical damage to all enemies within range. Hitting an enemy will grant a stacking attack speed bonus stacks up to 3 times. Each stack lasts for 8/6/4 seconds. While Skarner has 3 stacks, Crystal Slash deals bonus magic damage and slows them by 1 second.
- Changed from Hitting an enemy will grant a stacking attack speed bonus for 5 seconds that stacks up to 3 times. While Skarner has stacks, Crystal Slash deals bonus magic damage.
It adds that "sticking" feel back to Skarner, but with some pretty simple out-play. Skarner still needs to initiate with E and possibly get lane CC help to stack his Q to 3. But when he gets to this point, the opponent simply needs to keep Skarner from successfully casting his Q for 3 seconds. Opponents could do this with their own form of CC or simply not allowing Skarner to stick longer enough to stack his Q.
I will explain the 8/6/4 some more. So while at 1 stack, you have 8 seconds to successfully cast another Q to reach 2 stacks. From there, you have 6 seconds to successfully cast Q again before dropping to 0 stacks. If successful, every successful Q within the next 3 seconds will apply slows.
This could make Skarner an overly strong top laner. Theoretically, you can charge Q in lane then have a constant slow if you manage some CDR or get an AA in between each attack. Realistically, Skarner needs mana items to spam his Q while in lane, so although I believe this feature could imbalance him for the top lane, his lack of mana early on may overcome this.
Anyway, yeah, ditch making his E any stronger and just give back these people who miss old Skarner some of his old STICK. I really like the E as a gap closer instead of praying you stay on them long enough until you can get another E off. The main reason I feel Skarner could use more that extra stick is because he doesn't have the burst damage like current top tier junglers.
