Questions... a newb player.

I've been playing this game for a month now. I'm mainly a console gamer and have only played computer games of the FPS genre, but this game is pretty amazing I like the idea of teamwork and strategies as a vital key to winning a game. The only major defect is the rage monsters...with the people who expect you to do really well and just constantly bombard the chat with raging comments...and the negativity in general and the AFK people, etc. I got reported several times (5 I think) and I think

Well I'm pretty hyped to start playing ranked games (only lvl 22, still a long way to go) and I heard that it's hard (in a way different from normal games)? How much does it differ from Draft Picks? And suggestions for what I should do to prepare myself for preparing into ranked games?

Besides that, I've been practicing on an unlocked camera for a few games and I can't stand it and people with locked screen are kind of taunted that they are "noobs"and I wouldn't like being called that so if you guys have some sort of set-up to ease the process of using unlocked camera.

Umm...forgot my other questions Ohh I was also wondering suggestions for which champ to buy for mid or a jungle, or bot? (I play mid (TF), bot support (Janna) and jungle (Diana))

I'm not even sure if this discussion should be in the Gameplay & Strategy section.

:/ I don't think some of my questions were clear...

Ranked games are considered tougher than normals for many reasons. When people play normals they usually dont try their hardest, but in ranked games, they do. In ranked there are also quite a bit more afkers and ragers. Lastly, in ranked, if you do poorly, people will get mad at you. Why? Because most likely you just lost them lp, which is extremely precious to most people.

For the unlocked screen part, I still have that issue, I cant figure out a good way to ease into it. However smart cast, I suggest you trying out, and it doesn't take that much getting used to.

Lastly, some suggestions for champs, how hard of a character do you think you can handle? What situations do you run into the most in that lane? For example, if you are going up against a lot of assassin's in the mid lane, I would suggest Kayle who is quite easy to play. For support, some general easy to play characters are Taric, Blitz, and Soraka. And for jungle, I would suggest someone like Shen, Amumu, Nunu, or Warwick, all of which are easy to jungle with in my opinion.

There are plenty of ragers in this game, i've encountered more than a few nasty ones ( i too rage at times, trying to fix that part of my game). The most important thing in ranked is CS differential between you and your opponent, objectives taken, and overall confidence even when losing. To be fair, you should have 100 cs by 15-16mins in almost any scenario, unless you are fighting constantly, if you are a non bot laner cs isnt as important, because you will have abilities with higher base damages while adc's rely heavily on items for damage. When you play ranked just be confident in your ability, even if you are losing badly or feeding, any game is salvagable in soloq ( despite what your teammates typing "gg" might think). Also you need to not play with locked camera, my best tip is to just force yourself to play without it. In regards to champions, pick any champion and stick with it. Any champ is viable in low level soloq, even champions that are considered UP can be played well into plat with great success. IMO diana jungle isnt that good tho. Go for someone with CC/ gap closer pre 6. GL and HF :D

(sorry wall of text)' PS: quick cast is a must, and you should learn to use it. Also, for adc, you need to learn how to use the attack move button for pro l33t kiting.

Before you attempt ranked make sure you have a grasp on all 5 roles in the game and atleast 1 champion for each of the roles as you might not get to pick what you want, experience is key and i wouldn't suggest jumping in to ranked, draft mode simulates what the ranked champion select is like so play a few rounds of that to get a feel for it.

Runes are also pretty important, there is a lot to prepare :)

Regardless of whether a player is new to the MOBA genre or not i recommend at least 200 normal wins. This is to;

Make sure you're familiar with at least a small selection of champions. Having a champion(s) you can play in each role is standard. This may change once the Team Building system is in place since we select our roles before queuing up.

Gain an understanding of the various champion play-styles, kits, cooldowns, etc.

Purchase at least two rune pages and tier 3 runes.

This is from experience. When i started over two years ago i also entered ranked at lv 30 and was in bronze. Making sure you're prepared and knowledgeable will help you and your teams a lot.

WELCOME! It's always nice to see new people really trying to reach out to get better. My suggestion to the locked camera issue, Is I actually use WSAD to control the camera, and changed my spells to 1,2,3,4 vs the usual Q,W,E,R. My summoner spells are E,R, and I have items bound to `,q,5,z,x. This is all personal preference in terms of where my summoners and items, but the WSAD I feel is important. The reason for this, is you can leave your mouse hand free to control your champ or aim.

Good Luck!

EDIT: Don't forget the SPACEBAR will bring your screen back to champ center, and if you hold it, it follows you!

i've been playing off and on for 3 years lol. have something like 700 games won. and i only started ranked this season. but for me, ranked is the real competition. and i was disappointed on starting to find out how many people play it instead of normals and that a good number of them were just not that great.

that said, after getting placed in silver III i decided that there was definitely a lot of room for improvement.

so what i'd suggest is to not play ranked at all, until you have 3 champs in each role down pat. you feel comfortable with them and have played with them in so many scenario's it's hard to wrong foot you. with those 15 champs. i'd have rune pages filled. they don't have to each have a different one. but i'd have somewhere from 6-9.

that will get you up to the 200+-300 game mark. but it will get you placed in a higher league, with better players. at the higher levels you end up with less ragers from what i've gathered.

but it's not an easy thing to get to once you're placed.

i'd also recommend, that when you play ranked, you treat as the real thing. and relax and not take normals so seriously. they aren't a big deal. it's a great place to try new things. but when you play ranked, people take it seriously and expect you to bring your A game. sure you'll still have a bad game hear and there. but it will take the sting out of things if you have champs that you can bring to counter their champs.

that's the biggest difference about ranked. drafting. if you pick mid early, regardless of how comfortable you are. you can get hard picked by the opposition and still lose your lane. if you pick a stronger more OP/balanced champ, then you might lose your lane but help out in team fights later.

i wouldn't rush to ranked if i was you. i definitely should be playing more. but i'm still working on my having 3 competent jungles. (my formerly weakest position) i've also started winning more and enjoying the game more since i started saying FILL in normal games. it means that i get a team full of players more comfortable on their role. and i get to practice one of my less used roles.

so excited for teambuilder as it will make learning and practicing champs much easier.

if you want to play some draft with me when you hit 30. add me. it should result in players with higher # wins like me playing against you. might emulate how ranked will be. no idea.

either way, glhf.

FYI, most people don't even bother reporting after they threaten you with it.

Don't rush into ranked, its highly toxic towards new players.

heres a basic check list for you before you rush into ranked play:

  1. Build up multiple complete tier 3 rune pages

  2. have at least 3 champs in all 5 positions that you feel comfortable with

  3. make sure you understand the meta (i don't care about it but you will be harrassed constantly for not conforming to it)

  4. Know when and where to ward, vision is the most important thing after communication

  5. make sure you understand the reason a champ is in that role (i.e. do NOT use amumu for support just because he is tanky, he will do nothing to help your adc farm)

and just so you know, 99% of the time below gold, amumu and blitz will be bannded. 85% of the time shen and malphite will be banned as well.

OH! and as for unlocked/locked screen, just keep playing with an unlocked screen and keep your thumb on the space bar. hitting the space bar will center your screen back over your champ. so if a team fight breaks out you can just hold your space bar down til its over.

Good luck and see you on the battlefield!

Wow! djump thanks for all his efforts on giving me advice! Also thanks for everyone that has taken their time giving me advice!!! Really HELPFUL! It will take me sometimes to probably master the camera unlocked and quick cast (smart cast). But I've decided that I should practice more on top lane and try not tempt myself from buying Champs instead of runes. Will also practice on last hitting minions...I usually just keep trying to kill minion for pushing purposes...but I have realized before how much gold I've lost when I let the minions or turrets get the kills. I already expected people to tell me I should jump into ranked games when I hit lvl 30, which I don't mind, I don't want to be placed in a low-tier bronze after all.

Any more tips would be nice (even though all or if not most of my questions were answered)

:D THANKS...(I was expecting to get trolled in the forums...but that didn't happen you guys were all helpful)

the only way to get better is to just play. use next season to improve. i was silver in s1 and i kept on playing. got diamond in s2 from gold in 2 months during summer.

My advice would be to just try and ignore the people who are just talking mad smack as best you can, and just send in the report at the end. But for the actual gameplay aspect I play unlocked, just my preference. With the draft pick to ranked game aspect keep the same mentality that you'd generally have in normal matches. Now, with your next question about a champion to buy, I'd say, don't buy anymore for now until you think you are really good with those that you play. If you want, feel free to add me on league we can play matches together, and I can give you pointers, I've also got skype so we can talk through there if you'd like.

no talk me10/23/2013, 2:29:11 AM1 votes

First and foremost, yes, there are people who rage in ranked at all levels of play. The easiest way to avoid this is to just ignore them and mute them if they're being toxic. Obviously if they're trolling you're just SoL, move on to the next game, it happens.

The biggest issue people have with ranked is that they get too worked up over an afk/leaver and it makes them mad, affecting their gameplay.

tldr; don't let people get to you.

Moving on, pick 2-3 champions for each role to start learning, that way you probably won't be banned out. Being versatile is incredibly important in ranked, as it let's other players play what they're good at, while you do well in positions they may have done poorly at.

I wouldn't recommend TF in mid for a new player, he's too easily countered by the assassin meta game. Try picking up Ahri, Lux, or Ori for starting mids. They're all ranged AP casters and are generally pretty safe picks. These will also help you with your skillshots.

Bot, I would recommend Ezreal, Corki, or Cait for ADC, they're all safe picks and are very viable. As for support, Sona, Zyra, and Janna are your top three safe picks. They all have great disengage and CC.

Sorry for the lengthy post, hope you get something out of it :)

Eyrgos10/23/2013, 9:22:45 AM1 votes

Well, starting out it's best to focus on 2 select roles... so I'd pick between Mid/Jungle/Support for your "main positions"... yes, you should have a fine knowledge of each position in case you're forced into a role you don't particularly enjoy... and for that, it's best to be proficient in at least 2 champions of every role (preferably different types, like an all-in ADC or a poke ADC, an AD top or an AP top, & etc.)

Champions I'd recommend:

Mid - Kassadin & TF

Jungle - Jarvan IV & Udyr

Support - Sona & Thresh

  • I main ADC, if you'd like to practice your Support out with me as your ADC in Bot Lane, I would gladly give some pointers+. I'm Diamond skill-level & second Support role, so I know it very well.

Rage monsters and AFKs? Welcome to the League, buddy. I would suggest getting some friends to play with. The game is much more fun with people you actually know. As for ranked...well it's definitely going to be hard to get to that league you want to be in. You may be a great player when you get to that stage, but the other people who really aren't will just drain all your LP till' you got nothing'. As for the champ recommendations, I would suggest just finding a character you are awesome at. Just try em' all out, you'll find one.
