Funny the comment on latest and greatest of technology, where LoL is still rocking adobe air and easily has the worse client and infrastructure of the two.
Dota has a 1v1 mid lane game mode, ability draft (pick a new set of abilities for ur random hero), all random death match, and various draft choices. But accurate, there is only 1 map all of this is played on. Community maps are coming soon. Endless community driven map designs, pudge wars, mario kart, even a lol port, etc etc etc. LoL may have 4 maps to choose from, but anyone with more than 50hrs logged only really plays on 1 map.
Dota Heroes actually have names, i just never bothered to learn 'em. Kardel Sharpeye is the name of the sniper, just easier to call him sniper...everyone knows who ur talking about. Game was complex enough without learning hero names. Tho as a community LoL has done better to preserve immersion and use champ names vs titles/descriptions. I think LoL is much better in champ design (aesthetically) at least....but really its just girl with rack, other girl with rack, and yet another girl with bigger rack....fan service is strong in this game.
The locked roster does not help users play more of the roster, it only forces new players to buy 1 champ and spam it every game till u can afford the next FOTM champ.
Dota is too hard to learn, too many mechanics that requires you to fail or to do ur own research. LoL is better for new moba players and has a great balance between ease and replayability.
I've played both and tbh I love them both for their unique aspects. I have strong likes and strong dislikes with both as well. A lot of these arguments weren't really balanced and IMO Dota 2 has the much better made game but also a major deterrent with the complexity of the game.
Most of my friends who never played a MOBA and tried learning it had a very hard time as most people who are willing to play dota 2 are veteran moba players. My league of legend friends don't even want to learn the game because there is so much more to it than league.
Oddly enough the popularity of these games can be almost directly compared to the days of Call of Duty vs Battlefield. Call of Duty was much more popular than Battlefield not because it had more to offer but it was just simpler and faster. Battlefield tried to offer more realism and complexity and although it was a great game people don't always care to put that extra effort into learning those features. They just want to pick up the controller or mouse and let off some steam.
