What exactly is Jarvan IV?

Hello! This is my first boards post here, and while I'm still pretty new at the game, I can still differentiate between the different classes. I've played a lot of Overwatch and a little bit of HotS for reference.

Jarvan IV honestly confuses me... He's got the look and abilities for a good tank character, but I've only played one game against him... and uhh... they had this item? I'm not sure how the whole "lethality" thing works but from what I looked up, isn't that like... an assassin item? I'm really confused as to how this guy can have such high base stats because he's a tank, but build this and one-shot me as a semi-fed marksman with lifesteal and a lot of attack speed. Maybe it's just me? I dunno. I just wanna know what he is, and if it's possible to make him this OR that, not both.

He's a bit of a jack of all trades. He can be built dozens of different ways depending on what he feels his team needs.

He seems he would be most efficient as a tank or tank esque, but I rarely see him built as such anymore.

Jarvan is something the new team hates... a bruiser. Insane damage potential, or the potential to be a tank, but not both. He specializes in one or the other.

Incidentally that lets players think too much, so they have repeatedly nerfed his ability to tank.

He was never a tank lol he is a diver like Jax and Irelia.

Hes SUPPOSED to be a tank but has always been played as a diver because its more effective. His damages are so high and abilities so reliable to hit(point and click nuke ult) that people build full damage with some hp/ad items in the mix to make him an assassin.

An assasin. Because riot keeps nerfing his resistances utility instead of his obnoxious dmg for years now.

Basically, build him as the game is going and what your team needs. If you need to go full tank, you can. If you need to go bruiser/diver you can. If you need to go AD damage, you can.

Because of these things, he's a great champ to blind first pick as a jungler.

He's jarman. He's helping. J4 is a diver but constant nerfs and free armor pen makes lethality very useful on him.
