You ever stop and think about how much info we retain for League?

ModCaptainMårvelous·8/31/2017, 8:15:42 AM·78 votes·2,353 views

League has just short of 140 champions. Each champion has 5 skills- 4 abilities and one passive. That's roughly 695 abilities for these champions. (This doesn't count champions like Jayce or Elise who have 6+ abilities)

We have roughly 110-ish items in the game, counting consumeables. These items range from basic items item 1029 that serve one purpose to actives item 3152 with unique scaling, effects and more.

Runes and masteries are quite numerous, having to set-up and min-max a page or two of 30 slots. Masteries have 45 effects, coupled with certain masteries that are above others (Keystone and major runes).

10 summoner spells. 12-ish if you count ARAM and some RGMs.

Map specific stuff complicates this even more. Jungle spawns, unique aspects of maps (Alters on TT vs. Red/Blue buff on SR vs. Ascension Markers/Dominion points), etc.

And the weirdest part is that we all subconsciously know this stuff. If I see a Lee sin with Thunderlords, I know he probably took certain runes/masteries. I have a vague idea of what he's doing. I know the ins and outs of his kit and sometimes (while it varies by person) I can even get a good estimation on how much damage he'll do. (Hint: Fuckload).

Either way, I just think it's surprising how much League tells us to hold onto info-wise and how we tend to do it subconsciously. And then the preseason comes and destroys everything oops

That is just counting currently relevant info too. A lot of us remember things that characters used to do and items that used to exist as well.

But yeah, pretty amazing.

MrHaZeYo8/31/2017, 8:19:53 AM30 votes

That also doesn't include knowledge of match ups. power spikes, what situation items work best in, item costs and combine costs.

League is a huge burden of knowledge and you're right, it's crazy how most people who've played for a couple years can remember dam near everything. It's also why it's somewhat hard to teach people to play League, you have to teach them little bits at a time.

the most important info to retain about this game is "ban Yasuo and Zed " i think

Êmperor8/31/2017, 8:16:58 PM10 votes

Meanwhile I can't even remember the 50 states.

It never ceases to amaze me that my memory is so effective for games. Because I also have close to the same depth of knowledge that I do for LoL for DotA, Smite, HoN, AND Strife for what it was worth.

I have the maps of Dark Souls and Dark Souls 3 along with all of the item locations in the game committed probably close to 100% to memory. I have the swing speeds/times of most weapons committed to muscle memory even when it comes to parrying.

I know practically every Minecraft recipe as well as how to perform numerous game breaking bugs in Morrowind, Oblivion, AND Skyrim while also remembering the bulk of their maps and locations.

It's some crazy shit when you really stop and think about it. At least the sense of direction that I've gained from games like Dark Souls and the Elder Scrolls games has bled into my actual sense of direction. I almost never get lost.

I really don't remember much about the game past mid season 5. Thats the last time I gave a damn.

SteelMankind8/31/2017, 3:19:45 PM4 votes

Goes to show you that League is really an incredibly complicated game in a way most veteran players can't realize. Look at the difference between a silver player who's been playing for a few seasons and someone who just started their first account. The silver player likely knows everything the OP mentioned, whereas the new guy is struggling with things like where the shopkeeper is, and how to find things to kill for gold.

Hint: Fuckload

Yeah that's pretty much what happens when Lee uses everything on you assuming he actually hit you with them

The human brain is amazing, isn't it?

Drugoth8/31/2017, 2:56:16 PM3 votes

Imo we retain a lot of information just being gamers in general. Think about how many different unique video games you've played over your life.

Metal gear solid: The SOCOM is in the truck at the heliport, if you miss it there, you can get it again in a room on the east side of 1F. If you picked up the SOCOM in the truck, the thermal goggles will be in that room instead.

Crash Bandicoot: password for level 2

○□○□○○^□

Link to the past: You can get the upgraded boomerang immediately after the Zora flippers at a hidden fairy fountain behind a waterfall at the foot of the mountain.

These are just a few examples of the many many things I've memorized playing all these games xD

My dad looks at me with disgust because of how much of my brain is dedicated to useless information like this.

AntiSkillshot8/31/2017, 8:54:00 AM3 votes

I actually retain less info about League than I do about the following: Warframe. Driving. Fire Emblem. My diabetes. My work.

I basically out right stopped caring about the lore, though. Probably why...

The MechE9/2/2017, 1:52:09 AM2 votes

Yep, us humans sure do love our daily dose of information.

The fact you keep getting suprised, and you know you can do better with more knowledge or experience---- you make a mistake or are outplayed and feel, hey, I've learnt something! It's fun, it's what makes this game so great.

The things you do to win! mehehehehehehehe

Don't forget that we remember what roles different champs play and can guess out how a team comp will play out from champ select, we can guess what champs will fill out the remaining roles just by seeing part of the enemy team.

There are about 1,790,000,000,000,000,000,000 possible team combinations just taking the 138 champions we have by the 5 roles on each team.

The crazy thing is that we know most of these don't work, we can mentally parse down all those possible combinations by cutting out unlikely things like Janna Jungle and whatnot, throughout all of champ select we break down those possibilities until we can realistically figure out what their team comp is going to look like.

League is nothing - I used to know by memory the base stats and common movesets of every Pokemon in the Gen 4 OU, BL, and UU Tiers.

Pokémon.

I agree, there should be university major League Science, offering Bachelor Bronze Degree and Master Degree.

Mighty Mortein9/1/2017, 6:42:17 PM2 votes

It is pretty cool to know how much we actually remember. Especially for those who understand a large % of champion cooldowns, scalings, scaling stats, etc. There is a lot of information in League. And it's not impossible to retain a lot of this information. Which is what is even cooler.

Cowseed8/31/2017, 9:30:42 PM2 votes

What's ironic is that I find it hard to rember people's name yet on league, no, video games in general I can name people just given subtle hints.

Wonder what the extent of human knowledge will be in 1 or 2 hundred years

(2217 Okay class. Today we will be learning about the anotomy of a 5 spoke fidget spinner)

Miraweave8/31/2017, 9:01:14 PM1 votes

Yeah, it's kind of crazy when you think of it that way.

I also recently realized just how much I have to know to play magic. Not only can I probably name 100+ cards off the top of my head and describe another 200+ if I'm given their names, I also have to remember all the top tier decks in multiple formats that I play, what cards those decks usually play in their maindeck and sideboard, how to recognize them from their plays over the first few turns, and then all that information again for a lot of lower tier decks in legacy.

DariusDemiurge8/31/2017, 9:02:32 AM1 votes

When something is fun it is easier to learn and retain the knowledge so not really a surprise. We also phase out a lot of useless or weak shit, example ohmwrecker or whatever it's name is, certain champions, etc.

OurLestrade8/31/2017, 10:10:04 AM1 votes

It sort of bothers me how I know this stuff even as a long time casual player, yet I struggle to remember even the most basic concepts in my driving lessons.

BlackFlux8/31/2017, 10:16:59 PM1 votes

On a related note,i have trouble remembering how to do long division(way before league even so I had all the time in the world to do that) yet I can remember what every mastery does and make pages in seconds, remember how to play with 40+ characters even after leaving for weeks, and remember builds for even my least played champions/those champions where the basic rule is DONT FOLLOW THE ITEM PATH YOUR TOLD TO!

weird how video game information sticks so well. even on games like starcraft

Xx420n0sc0p3sxX8/31/2017, 10:30:26 PM1 votes

I've actually thought about this a few times, then I thought about how much I forget about school stuff and then I realize the education system is hot garbage.

snibedi snab9/1/2017, 2:45:34 PM1 votes

The most pertinent information to remember about League is to play a better game.
