What am I doing, legally, when I 'purchase' a skin from the LoL store?

I feel like at some point Riot made a change to the ToS to dictate that we're not actually purchasing the content anymore (this way they could hypothetically turn Fizz into an ADC from Mt Targon and anyone with skins for him has no legal right to demand refunds).

Are we renting content now? What's the legal definition?

You are trading a virtual currency for virtual goods, and you own neither. You get a right to use them as long as you have your account.

You can think of it like buying a pass to use a slide at a water park. The water slide isn't yours, but you can use it as long as you're in the park.

you are buying/using a license to use riot's software and cosmetics within the software, and that license can be revoked at any point for any reason

They didn't change anything. Video game companies never sell you their product. They allow you to use it.

you don't own anything, riot just lets you "have" those things and they have legal right to delete your account if they felt like it

They really need to change the wording, It's renting, you don't ever own anything. Pretty shady if you look at it from a moral standpoint. But that is how society has decided things are for now.

they no longer offer refunds when theyre reworking champs cuz everyone (i did this twice lol) uses the refund to get rp/ip back regardless of if they were attached to the champ

They never changed the TOS on you, it's always been the way everyone has explained to you.

Now this is the kind of discussion I hoped to generate of this topic.
