So how do background check companies work exactly anyone know?

So i had an interview for a hospital. Did well (janitor position but pays really well) then i was told i had to pass a background check.

So i had a friend tell me that his grandma would lie for me because she owned a business and she had lied for his other friends.

He encouraged me to put her down, so i did, and her contact.

Time passes and i start getting emails from the background check company. That's odd. I click them and it states they can't reach my reference.

At this point i didn't know anything was necessarily wrong. I asked him about the number and he gave me the CORRECT one. Whoops i made a typo.

So i give them the correct number. The background check company calls me and calls my other reference, however on their voicemail it apparantly says something like "if this is about a candidate please leave their dates of work and your recommendation and if you would rehire" or something.

So my one reference leaves a voicemail about that. Good to go, i think?

So i tell my friend the background check company keeps calling me and other references and for his grandma to expect a call soon.

His grandmother calls him about it, and asks him my date of birth. (that info is irrelevant) he doesn't know it and they both start getting ANXIOUS.

She says it's weird i was unemployed for a year and she doesn't feel comfortable doing it.

He informs me of this, after i worked very hard to get an interview there and very hard to get through the background check process.

We get into an argument and he explains he won't "harass his grandma" for me. Then he tells me like you guys will " i shouldn't lie then" what the FUCK do you mean i shouldn't lie? YOU TOLD ME TO!!!!!! IF I WOULD'VE KNOWN THIS I WOULDN'T HAVE USED HER AT ALL.

The thing that makes NO sense is she is getting anxious for NO reason. She's closing her business soon and RETIRING it doesn't matter if she lies. What? She thinks she'll go to JAIL?

ANYWAYS, he tells me he informs her to not pick up any calls. I don't know how she would know which call is them.. (has me worried still) but i digress. I know that sometimes if they can't verify employment they MIGHT ask for W2's which i don't have.

To circumvent this i had my stepdad call them and leave a voicemail saying all the things that would indicate he was my boss and that he was the wife of the grandma. He gave them my dates of employment.

So.. i passed right? They said in the voicemail to just leave in the info. So both employers did and my other employer they called and talked to. Since the two that left voicemails i know lied for me i know they were good.

They can't "assume the people were lying" and then not hire me cause of that can they? Like that's not a good enough reason if they sounded like they were lying right? Especially over a phone call.
