Rogue One really captured the terror of the Death Star in a way that none of the other movies were able to. Just watching the debris shoot out into space after a partial firing and watching Imperial Officers essentially having a tea party on the viewing deck, safely insulated from the terror going on planetside was a very ominous moment. Not to mention the Death Star eclipsing the star when it is about to fire.
Rogue One felt modern but it felt like Star Wars through and through, which I cannot say about Episodes 7 or 8. They are good movies but they don't feel like Star Wars, they feel like general sci-fi. Every single other Star Wars movie, including the most hated Phantom Menace, all "felt" like Star Wars. In some ways those in control of the aesthetics are remarkably lazy. Look at the casino scenes in Episode 8. There is significant material in the Star Wars canon regarding gambling/clubs/etc. It's all holographic stuff, glyphs, techy-looking. In TLJ, it's frickin' cards and tables and otherwise exactly what a casino would look like today, with everything being physical. Absolutely immersion-breaking. And not to mention stupid. Really liked the movie on the whole, but the stupid gambling scenes are absolutely unacceptable and shameful. Every in-universe precedent for gambling centers is nothing like what was portrayed in the movie.
