I know my mother isn't familiar with the internet or NN, but this is kind of embarrassing.

Her position on the issue is as follows.

Removing NN benefits society because the government has too much control over everything and this is true because google is manipulative and blocks you from being able to see content they don't want you to see in order to create an echo chamber of political opinions.

I just don't even have words for this mess.

Like, I plan to explain to her how this system actually functions. But I just had to change the conversation after hearing this. Like how did she even come to this conclusion? Where did she even get the information to base this off of?

If she doesn't use the internet, probably from the people around her.

Click-baiting and the titling of 80% of the content on Facebook is meant to establish a certain mindset. Where do you think people get the idea that "Vaccinating your kids gives them autism" or "The origin of Halloween comes from Satanism".

Unfortunately, people who aren't particularly familiar with the internet as a whole tend to fall victim to these sorta things "My favorite account posted this article, so it must be true, they'd never lie to me."

Her facts are true but her conclusions are wrong.

Google does create an echo chamber, but not as badly as social media does. (Google also doesn't do it as part of intentionally manipulating you. Usually. It's just a side effect of the 'things you would also be interested in' algorithm.)

The government does do too much shit and have too much control, but that doesn't mean that they should stop doing the few things they do right.

You should listen to your mother, she actually knows the truth.
