Learning is not brainwashing. When you learned to shit in the toilet and not on the carpet when you were 3, that was the same kind of process. This kind of learning allows for both individuals (you and the dog) to not stress out, irritate each other, and both get beneficial gains from exhibiting the proper behavior.
