Why does WoW and LoL have different meanings of "snare"?

So according to WoW, a snare is a movement imparing effect that slows movement speed. In League, Root and Snares are one in the same. I'll admit I played WoW first, and I always classify slows as snares; and immobilizes as roots. Stuns are the same in both games I think.

I read that in League it's more "flavor text". Zyra "roots" because she's a plant and everyone else "snares", I guess because people hated saying: "Lux's bind rooted me".

Maybe because one is primarily a pvp game and one is primarily a pve game. Why does wow have significantly more ways to get aggro. While one has only a few champs capable of getting aggro.

I call em snares because a snare IRL is a kind of trap that immobilizes the prey in place. It doesn't just slow it down, it locks it down there.

Different etymologies.

WoW takes its meaning of 'snare' from Everquest and other MMOs in general, in which 'snare' came to mean 'anything that reduces movement speed by a percentage'.

League takes its meaning of 'snare' from some bullshit probably, I'm not actually sure where it's derived from, but it's obviously not the MMO usage. League was the first place where I had ever seen it used to mean 'all movement is denied', and that was back in 2009.

I think "root" is the official term league uses for all champs now. "Snare" and even "immobilize" are outdated terms that were inconsistently applied, but the playerbase still uses "snare" because we're familiar with it.

It's almost as if they are two different games

I mean root and snare do essentially mean the same thing. It's not riot's fault Blizzard doesn't understand that.

People call Morgana's Snare a Stun, so it's probably an issue of conflicting information.
