I remember the times when Tristana and Yi were melee AP mage assassins. Though I don't really miss that.
There are still other melee mages in the game, from Kass to Morde to someone like Vlad who can still be loosely considered as "melee". Hell, even Ryze is kinda one, during busy fights that is, given he would be pretty much required to run up to people's faces to use Q or have it blocked by other things.

First thought that came to mind was the demon cycle series. The protagonist uses martial arts to fight, but he engraved magical runes into his skin so every body part does something different.
