Why do I need to select "Lock in"

Legitimate question to Riot.

I've made my decision, I've chosen a character. I have no other option after that timer expires, so why make me select "lock in" as mandatory?

Why give me a loss AND make me wait to play again, for something so unnecessary? Why penalise my team and opponents by forcing them to re-make?

It all feels like a detractor with zero gain.

Because you're not supposed to be afk during any point of the game.

It's more or less another ready check, I suppose.

I mean, there's pretty much no chance you'll get a response anywhere from Riot.

Most people don't think it's a big deal, they've gotten used to it even though it's a pain, but there's a few people who actually think it's a good idea and will make a huge fuss about how they don't want their teammates to not sit there and stare at their screen for the entire champion select because they are deathly afraid of their teammates "costing" them elo.

Yes, I agree, it's a pain in the ass that does almost zero good and it would be a net positive to remove it from the game. But it won't happen for two reasons. One, there are probably Rioters that actually believe it helps. Probably. And two, even more importantly, it's better publicity for Riot to pretend it is a positive and keep it in, than it is for them to remove it and face more negative feedback when a bunch of kids cry about how they're afraid of AFKs costing them their precious elos.
