Since with their passives i'm atleast not gonna be useless after getting one shot by a zed!

You should be glad if the enemy picks a zed instead of something actually useful. Damage is great if you can get ahead but not every game is going to pan out. Mages on the other hand have a higher tendency to pack utility which I value more. Good lucking one-shotting people when you're cc'd.
If you're getting one-shot by Zed as Sion, you might have other problems to consider.
