I have a question about MMO's

So this question is inspired by the recent discussion about a LOL MMORPG potential.

I feel like MMORPG's are not as of interest now as they were a few years ago, but I personally love them. I'm just wondering if we have a clear idea on why.

Is it because people are just bored with the genre? Is it because people are spoiled by how easy and quick other games are now and don't want to put in the work of a mmorpg? What about other MMORPG's over the last few years? Elder Scrolls talked a big game, but then when they went live they dialed back their efforts a lot on end game content. WIldstar had a brief shining moment. Are devs just not willing to risk putting that much resources into a project? Do they not view it as worth it anymore? Are all devs just afraid that nothing they create can ever compete with WOW?

If anyone could provide some insight here if you do more research than I'm willing to that would be great. I'm a bit behind on the overall gaming scene but I'm sad to see that like since FF14 no one has really dared challenge WOW for MMORPG traffic.

TFW Runecraft did it first, but WoW did it best

People aren't bored of the genre. You can see how thirsty the MMO community is to jump on any trainwreck the eastern market offers to ship to the west. The fact of the matter though, is that MMOs, by their very nature, are "Massively Multiplier". Their entire infrastructure (from markets and economy to worldbuilding and immersion) is completely reliant on a big amount of players to sustain and nourish it.

Some relatively small companies can try and make an MMO, but as long as it isn't the biggest thing or anything near it there simply won't be enough players to sustain it. That's why WoW and Final Fantasy are basically the only ones that get to live in the market. Others just have their small moment before they're forever forgotten.

I can totally see a LoL MMO working though. It will probably have a big enough player base to be safe from the very start, and it may grow from there and cater to non-LoL audience as well.
