Irma is considered the third biggest hurricane since we have been able to record history.

Hurricane Andrew was considered an ABSOLUTE BEAST MODE hurricane and it was so strong that there was ACTUALLY A NEWSCASTER that said on tv

"If this moves 40 feet west you die, and all your family dies. There's literally no surviving this." And he wasn't actually joking. It didn't move west. So not that many people died.

Okay, i need someone who can help me figure this out.

I live ...in a vague area (this isn't my direct county) close to pasco county florida. Predictions state that by the time it comes near me it will be a low cat 4 or 3.

Supposedly.

Here's the thing...

People still die from a low cat 4 or 3, and it's nothing to scoff at.

It's like saying someone in league isn't CRAZY fed they're not 10-1 they're only 8-1

Oh in that case.... Oh wait. They're 8-1 still. I know comparing league to a hurricane is dumb, but this is the league boards so that's my analogy.

So. What do i do. I'm on the water so clearly get a decent amount off the coast but not too much because it's going near the middle of florida.

If there's a 10% chance i could die, that's too high and it's worth me leaving.

Do you think the chance is that high with how things are going with this hurricane based on my location?

If you are responsible to take care of yourself, use you're blooming brain and figure it out for yourself

This isn't a difficult thing to decide on

it's gonna take you forever to leave the state because everyone south of jacksonville is leaving too. You should've left three days ago

You could always go with my philosophy. I don't wear my seat belt or care to take shelter in tornado warnings because my belief is that if it is my time to die, I'm going to die whether I'm standing in a machine shed during a tornado or sitting inside of a padded bubble. Even if you leave now, what is to stop you from getting run over on the highway or mugged by some desperate person who accidentally kills you? I would honestly probably just take all the precautions I can like stock up on food and water then find a tall, sturdy structure to camp out at until the storm passes if you really are unable to leave. This is just me though, it is ultimately your life and your decision.

I am in Miami and in the same situation. All hotels immediately north are booked (you can check airbnb though) and there is major traffic. I am trying to secure my house and electronics as best as I can and staying in a 12th floor apartment outside zones A and B which is still a bit of risk but if there is a surge flood then I should be high enough to survive. Get as much gas, propane (with a portable stove of some kind), water, and food to survive for a few days (make sure it's canned and nonperishable). Try to stay with friends or family and if your unable to leave the area then stay somewhere above ground level and if possible secure a firearm in the event of looting/crime. Expect flooding and power outages (if you see any electric poles fall down stay far away), good luck and remember to survive and every material possession is secondary to that.

If you can leave, leave. Thing is at this point it's going to be difficult to leave. Don't get stuck on the highways when the hurricane hits. If you live in a very well constructed building you might be able to board it up and wade through it, but it's still a stupid risk.
