Your Skins Aren't Yours

When you spend money on a skin, you're not actually buying it. In reality you are licensing it from Riot, and they can take it away from you at any time.

You've already agreed to this when you click accept on the terms of service. It's in the fine print the Riot knows nobody reads.

Something to chew on next time you think about spending money on something from Riot. You'll own nothing.

That's the same for basically every single online game in the world though. You don't own an account, you are allowed access to it. You pay to be allowed access to other content, not to own said content.

Renting implies repeat payments.

The use the term "license", because that can be without expiration while still being something that can be revoked.

Well, yeah. I'd actually be surprised if people legitimately didn't know this. I've seen complaints about how much money people spent after they're permabanned.

another reason not to risk your $3k account on flaming [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

The ToU are certainly not fine print. Go check them out, they lay out everything very clearly and consicely, leaving out all the legal jargon that confuses people.

This is how all digital content works. Steam, iTunes, Blizzard, basically everything except GOG.

Oh dang that's some interesting info man... didn't know that the terms of policy said that (shh don't tell anyone that most of the LoL players never read the terms of policy)[slayer-jinx-wink]

This isn't new information? It's the same for all online MMO content.

Hell even steam where instead of buying Cosmetics, you're buying games, programs etc.

If you're caught doing committing fraud or hacking or going against their terms of service, Valve will take away your Steam Account and all of the content you purchased through it. The same way that if you go against Riot's terms of service they will take your account and all of the content purchased through it.

Stop giving Riot money.

When I go to the store to buy a retail copy of a new game, I am not actually buying that game. That would imply I'd have the rights to redistribute the game and make a profit (to some degree). All I'm doing is buying the rights to play the game and a way to have access to it.

Yes we know, so what exactly is your point? We are fine with this. You make it sound like Riot is going to remove the skins after 2 years to screw me over. But we all know Riot wouldn't do that because then they wouldn't have any customers left. No one is going to raid my house to remove all the retail copies of games I own either.

People just refer to skins as "my skins" because its a whole lot easier to say than "the skin I own a license to".

wow... crazy... something you buy digitally from a client isn't actually physically yours................... really activates my almonds.............................................................................................................. Next you're gonna drop the huge bombshell that you don't actually own your Steam games, that'll be the day.

They still need to follow whatever laws are in place where theyre operating/doing business with you, so generally its not as bad as people are saying. Even if their terms of service say "we can revoke your access to the content you paid for whenever we want for whatever reason we want", thats not likely true. If riot decided to just remove something you paid for because they just felt like it without reimbursement, it likely wouldnt go over well in court. If its revoked because you got banned for being a dick, well, that will likely hold up in court.

they're mine if i dont do anything to get permabanned or until the game dies out and league shuts down

So? You're sinking money into a video game. A game that contributes nothing but some entertainment to your life. Even if you did own the skins, you think it would have been some sort of sound fiscal investment?

Paíntchip2/9/2018, 8:39:40 AM1 votes

I made the mistake once of spending money on this game. I was perna banned wrongfully on that account. Now I spend nothing but time, and that I’m even getting tired of doing. Now I know Riot doesn’t give a rat’s ass about me not spending money considering they gave millions of players. It was more or less a shared experiance that could be applied to this along with other video games.

Ahri Inari2/9/2018, 9:01:15 AM1 votes

You need server to play anyway which is owned by Riot.

Worst Kench NA2/9/2018, 9:38:59 AM1 votes

Anyone with a brain is aware of this already. What's your point?

Pinkaj2/9/2018, 10:04:16 AM1 votes

Yup, our skins aren't really ours, and it's only virtual too. That's why I don't buy rp :P

EDIT: Also, when we die, none of it really matters anyway.

Wolvahulk2/9/2018, 10:38:45 AM1 votes

Isnt that like any virtual thing ever, you dont exactly own any steam games, they just give you access to them, and valve can take away any game they want without giving you your money back.

Fegone2/9/2018, 7:00:27 PM1 votes

Someone's salty they got 3 Soraka Champion shards in a Honor Capsule instead of a skin and now doesn't want other people to buy skins either.

ElJanitorFrank2/9/2018, 9:37:21 PM1 votes

Just like every other online game in existence. It's not like they're going to start taking away the skins willy nilly, because then people would stop buying them. The language is written to protect them legally when people try to sue them for account bans, not so they can just take away random peoples skins. Can they remove skins from people at will? Yeah, they probably could. But that isn't the purpose of the ToS and they would never do that, because then skin sales would decrease and they'd make less money.

If you want to spend 300 dollars and be a shitty person in game who ruins the experience for others and hurts the health of the game, you need to be prepared to be removed and lose 300 dollars. That is why it is written like it is in this game and every single other online game ever.
