What do you consider a Star Wars movie?
That is to say,
what comprises a Star Wars movie? What separates a Star Wars movie from other science fiction films?
Is it
- Rebels vs Empire
- The Force
- Lightsabers
- Giant battleships/land vehicles with lasers
- People from the old trilogy (4, 5, 6)
- Some combination of all of the above or all of the above?
I only ask because I read that they're going to start production of a Obi Wan Kenobi film in 2018, and I was thinking "why can't they make a Star Wars film that doesn't have anything to do with the original characters from the og trilogy.
Then I thought, could Disney actually make a Star Wars film that did not have The Force, The Empire, Lightsabers, Stormtroopers, or any callbacks to any trilogy? I originally thought yes, but then I realized without one or any of those it wouldn't really be a Star Wars film; just a standard sci fi film.
I then got this idea of an R-rated crime thriller that takes place in the star wars universe. The main character is a cop or private detective on a planet and he has to solve a murder or something; and he has to team up with someone who has the force but doesn't really know what it is; and through their investigation they learn things about one another and maybe the cop dies at the end and the guy with the force gets disillusioned and goes off to learn power.
