Zoe's animation is amazing. But the rest of her feels... awkward and lackluster.
To begin, let me just say again. The animation team for Zoe did an amazing job. All the little quirks really bring this character to live. And it looks pretty smooth for the most part. Can really see that went all out to bring out Zoe's personality through her animation. But that's where we have to stop.
I've touched on her personality and voice design before. But it's boring. Can't really say anything else. "I'm the girl" isn't a personality. It gets obnoxious when half her dialog is her talking about how girly she is or how she likes a guy. It looks cute when she's jump roping down the lane or playing with a yo-yo on her way to murder somebody. It's not really cute when you've heard her say self-conscious dialog about her she's a girl for the 20th time that game. I really feel like the team that comes up with her dialog really failed to create an interesting character here.
And lastly we have her kit. Which all I can say is, Aurelion Sol. Neat ideas, doesn't really work. If you're going to create a character off hard to play unique ideas, they have to be providing something really powerful. Years ago when Lee was god of the rift it's because no other character could dash behind the enemy ADC and kick him into your team. Aurelion Sol failed as a character because he really didn't do anything unique that other characters couldn't do while being difficult to play. You practically asked people to not play him.
Zoe feels the same way. I don't really see why I'd play her. There are better options for mobility assassins. There are better options for long range mages. Zoe's biggest strength is that you can't flash away from her... wow color me impressed
Her kit has a lot of unique designs but they don't really come together to do anything. She feels overall lackluster in kit design. Sure, she can do a ton of damage and move around a fight like crazy. So can Katarina, LeBlanc, Zed, Fizz, and Kassadin without having to put in a ton of extra work to get their damage off.
It makes me feel bad for the animators who put all this work into a character that is hardly going to be played at all.
You can create hard to play characters but they actually have to feel like you're being rewarded. Not feel like you could just be playing somebody else that would get the job done better and easier.
