Talk Nerdy To Me. (Favorite books? Looking for recommendations)

Hey not sure if theres any readers in this community, but I just finished a couple novels during the holiday break, and need new series to dive into.

I finished:

Brent Weeks Night Angel Trilogy Patrick Rothfuss Name Of the Wind (book 1, 2 and mini) and Nevernight by Jay Kristoff (book 1 and 2)

All three are gritty assassin/fantasy novels. (real nerdy shit :P )

What are you guys reading? Any recommendations? [sg-ahri-2]

EDIT: Since there's alot of people replying to this.. I'd like to recommend a few of my own that you guys may enjoy, or havent heard of.

The three I listed above are really great, with Nevernight being my current favorite assassin/fantasy series. I'd recommend them over and over, some of the best reading material I've come across.

I think the Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo introduces some of the best versions of character archetypes we're familiar with. The amount of twists and turns and "Oh shit" moments that come up is just brainbending. The main character Kaz Brekker is one of the most badass characters to ever come out of a book in my opinion. There are subtle undertones to the book dealing with morality, mortality, mental and physical crutches. It's just really a truly great piece of work. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Stay away from anything by Sarah J Maas. She's terrible.

Check out https://old.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/ if you have not been there before, they have good reading suggestions, reviews, lists, ect.

Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn, 3+3 books, Stormlight Archives, 3 of 10 books, both unfinished) and Robin Hobb (The Realm of the Elderlings, starting with Assassin's Apprentice, 4 trilogies and a quartet, apparently unfinished) are fairly similar, and masterpieces of modern fantasy.

If you want something more lighthearted fantasy related, there's always the Discworld series by Pratchett. As for dark fantasy, there's the The Black Company series by Glen Cook (really, REALLY good for something so relatively unknown) You also would want to check out The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss. Author himself is an avid RPG player.

Wheel of Time series is good.

Though you better be in for the long haul, in audio book form the 14 books total over 19 days of audio.

Well if you want an extremely long fantasy story, that also happens to be one of my favorites, try Wheel of Time. A lot of books, so be ready for some heavy reading.

I recently finished "His Fair Assassin" by Robin LaFevers. Its pretty interesting.

Its a trilogy about three sisters, who all are tied to this cult of death. They're also all involved in some political conflict in medieval france. Lots of violence, lots of deaths, and the main characters are really unique compared to other genres. (Beast is my favorite)

Let me know what you think if you read it.

My favorite series is Wheel of Time, if you're into fantasy

It's almost high fantasy, but there's no elves or dwarves

There's also a Blind Guardian song that becomes 50x better after you read the books

i read the Hunger Game trilogy and i liked that.

Worm, Pact, Twig, A Practical Guide to Evil, The Gods are Bastards. These are gonna be up your alley for sure.. I'd bet my limbs on it tbh xD Especially Worm and PAct.... I'd actually love to discuss books with you. I recently finished Rothfuss' works as well and have been wanting to talk to someone about it xD. but PLEAAASSEEEE Check out Worm at least. Pact I really hope you read too... APGTE, TGAB and Twig too xD. check good reads. It should be noted Pact is much darker than Worm, and that's largely why it's ratings dip... It is directly competing against Worm... several people have said Pact is objectively better than most of the works put out, but fall a bit behind Worm due to how dark it can get. That being said, Worm is goddamn amazing, and objectively Worm is probs better, but Pact I completely fell in love with the World and Magic system.... both are revolutionary. And it's really not an exaggeration. They rationalize, deconstruct and reconstruct their respective genres. I cannot implore you enough to check them out haha.

Danganronpa

The Mortal Instrument Series

If you don't mind FanFics/Wattpad/AO3 stories I have a few good ones that are extremely well written and have OCs.

Wheel of time is always good. Brandon Sanderson also has some good series like Stormlight Archive.

Eleshakai11/26/2018, 5:28:59 AM1 votes

Anything by Brandon Sanderson. Sanderson is on a roll right now and everything he's doing is spectacular. (It's almost a pity he took time away from writing good stuff to do Wheel of Time, means we had to wait longer for good books from him ;))

Try reading ''The Whisperer in Darkness''.

I find it intriguing that pretty much everyone on this thread mentions The Mistborn series; which, unfortunately, left me kind of disappointed and especially its ending.

And it makes me kind of sad that nobody has, so far, mentioned The Malazan Book of the Fallen which is considered a masterpiece among fantasy literature. (surpassing even Tolkien imho)

For another fantasy literature I would suggest series of books from R.A. Salvatore; The Forgotten Realm (you might need a help of wiki to know which books starts first :) )

And if you are going for a Sci-fi stuff you definitely should not miss books related to Warhammer 40 000, respectively;

  • Space Wolves; William King (look for Space Wolf Omnibus)
  • Gaunt't Ghosts; Dan Abnett

From sci-fi branch I would recommended Peter F. Hamilton, he got some awesome stuff (tho u need to skip some books). And if you are looking for some quality laugh you may as well take a look at:

  • Space Team; Barry J. Hutchinson (finished just first book, too poor to buy some more)
  • Expeditionary forces; Craig Alaison
  • Old Man's War; John Scalzi (easy to read and you finish it quickly)

Also an interesting series of books were written by a Chinese author Cixin Liu; The Three body Problem (Resemblance of the Earth's past)

And if you happen to be interested in a science literature I may get you something as well.

For actual published work Wheel of Time is by far one of the best fantasy series. Also, if you haven't read it already The Silmarillion collection is good.

For online novels The Good Student is really good. It starts off a bit slow but it's worth it in the long run. Additionally The Kingdom's Bloodline is good. (Once you reach a point it will ask you for spirit stones but just go to Qidian Underground subreddit to read further.)

Seconding/Thirding/whatevering Discworld books by Terry Pratchett lighthearted fantasy

Tamora Pierce has probably the best description of magic in general that I know of in Circle of Magic, tho YA. It's different but still enjoyable reading it when I'm older xD.

DearPear11/28/2018, 12:32:12 PM1 votes

Read anything from Philip K. Dick, period.

The Sword of Truth

The Wheel of Time

two similar series, both 12+ books long, and ranging from 500-1500 pages per book

best two series i've ever read

I feel ill equipped to make any recommendations on ordinary novels right now. It's been ages since I've bought anything that wasn't warhammer or DnD related, and since I don't have as much expendable income as I used to I've been sticking to web novels lately. I only have access to the first 2 books in the Wheel of Time series, and I can tell you that it's a pretty good read so far, but it's going to be a pretty big time investment to get through all of them.

If you're ok with something more simple / amateurish I can recommend an ongoing web novel. It's not incredible obviously, but I found it somewhat interesting. Only downside is that the author is struggling to keep to the 1 chapter/week schedule because he/she is working 2 jobs right now. https://creativenovels.com/novel/134/hidden-forge-lucem-ac-tenebras/

Purely for age demographic, am 22.

Skulduggery pleasant: I love the authors humor in these books. If you're into magic in any way, you'll love em especially the later installments. Have re read them to the point where the first 5 books are falling apart.

"Why did you have to break the window?" "Doors are for people with no imagination"

Gone ( series): aspects of scifi but more reeled in. Kids are locked away from the outside world and must survive without the aid of the internet or adults. All the characters are memorable which is an achievement given how many it juggles

I am number 4 (series). Solid sci fi series. The last hopes of an alien race against a warmongering alien lord.

Friends suggestion: world shaker series.
