Would skinning an animal and shaving an animal yields different things right?

Like you skin an animal for a different reason than shaving one? You need an animal skin because animal fur wouldn't be the same? Like if I wanted to make some warm clothes and needed a dead animal I would have to skin it or would shaving it be fine like with sheeps?

Edit: I ask because I'm playing a D&D game and recently saved an animal who in turned helped us a TON with fighting things because we're all level 1. Though we got a side quest that grants a lot of gold for that specific animal's fur. I'm wondering if I could just shave off some fur from the animal otherwise I won't even bother trying to kill it.

Edit: Animal is a bear and the guy asked for fur. ######I ask here because I have no where else to go lmfao

We shear sheep because wool is thick and long and can be processed into thread.

Fur on the other hand cannot. Imagine the leftover when someone with short hair gets a hair cut. You have hundreds of tiny pieces of hair. For something with fur you need to skin it because the skin keeps all the fur connected and anchored.

depends on the animal

Youd have to skin the bear. Get a sheep.

you would need to skin it either way. sheep are only shaved because they have wool. if you shave a squirrel, it won't give you much other than stuffing. but if you skin it, you can have lining

The difference between the result of shaving an animal, and the result of skinning an animal, is the difference between the bits of beard hair you shave off and a wig.

While it is theoretically possible to save up all of the beard you shave off and make a wig out of it, it's not an easy task at all, and it probably wouldn't be a very good wig.

if your DM lets you get away with shaving the animal when they need a pelt you need a new DM
