A friend of mine is starting league for the first time

Hexs Fortune·11/6/2019, 3:53:06 PM·7 votes·6,538 views

Going to be fun seeing the game alongside the perspective of a fresh pair of eyes

What advice should I give him?

He said he stumbled upon some vids suggesting nocturne as a good champ for newbies.

He described nocturne as a snake like creature. Ah the good times of being a newbie..

First time I got karthus ulted I thought the light was the game celebrating me for doing something awesome and then...dead lol

Tell him to buy thornmail on Ashe until he figures it out.

He shall feel what we felt

ViperVenom11/6/2019, 4:55:06 PM6 votes

You should advise him to uninstall.

Best advice you can give him is to remember to have fun because at the end of the day league is a game.

Unpopular opinion, start off in aram. Me and my younger brother were absolute dogshit even after some bot matches, so rather than try to learn all of SR at once we just spammed aram. We learned more about champs that way and since it was basically a death match our mechanical ability shot up real quick. Completely alone, aram is not great for learning, but with someone else you can cover for each other.

make him play these champs their all easy champs for a reason and 1 for each lane advice for hi/her will be stay away from the enemy and kill minions Top: Garen JG: Master Yi Mid: Annie Support: janna adc: ashe

Ehhhh11/6/2019, 4:13:27 PM2 votes

Push through and ignore the toxicity in lower elo/level. Don't let the toxicity get to you

snaketurne skin when

MissRippedJeans11/6/2019, 4:00:20 PM2 votes

Nocturne was my first champion too but I didn't know how to jungle and jungle is a bit of a hard position to start with. I started with Sona support and that was super easy to get the hang of. Support and ADC are usually the best to start someone new off on because then you can duo with them in lane and teach them things and give them advice while being right there with them. I always love bringing new people to this game but I always feel that there's a huge learning curve! Good luck to your friend

start him out on an easy champ to teach him the basics, then try to get him to pick a champ that interests him.

i always tell new friends to pick the champ that looks coolest to them. whether it be based off abilities or pure looks. i dont like the idea of pushing "easy" champs on people, because 95% of people will be able to learn any champ with enough games played. i mean, almost all champs now are skillshot based. better get them used to skillshots early

Win lane, win game, or don't and quit.

Forhonor32111/6/2019, 9:26:31 PM1 votes

Tell him to stop playing immediately and move on to something better!

OK, for a serious answer if he really wants to start:

  • Put him on some easy to pick up champs to start learning the basics and just get a feel for how some abilities may work: Annie Garen Malphite LeonaNunu Warwick Tristana Ashe Fiddlesticks Sona Veigar should be a good roster list for him to choose from and start getting to know the roles, see what he likes (Most of them are also pretty cheap for BE or RP).
  • Have him keep playing Bot games until he really starts how to CS, build, get use to abilities (i.e. skillshots), etc. Maybe even have him keep doing that until he has all summoners as well.
  • Have him pick what looks cool to him. If he wants to play Aatrox because he's a giant demon with a sword (and not because of his gameplay issues) let him. If he wants to try Nocturne, why not? Let him get use to champs that look fun to him.
  • Try to keep a level head and push past the toxicity. It's very easy to become discouraged nowadays due to the condition of the game and, to an extension, the community but if you can push past that, the game can be fun (though to me it still feels rare but i digress).

I played Tryndamere and always vertical jungled because I thought the other's team blue WAS my blue LOL so define jungle sides as well because I didn't watch anything about League. Just dove right in.

I think the best advice you can give to anyone that's new to League is to tell them to expect to be bad at it for a long time.

A lot of my friends who I've tried to get into League have become so overwhelmed and insecure about how terrible they are at the game.

Explain to them that the vast majority of this game is knowledge. Knowing all the champions, their rotations, their power spikes, where they go in any particular meta, which ones are useful in any given meta, how to manage waves, when to roam for objectives, when to expect a jungler to be on your side of the map, etc... and you can't get that knowledge without putting in the hours.

Miss Fortune is great to learn on, or a mage like Lux or Morgana. Jungle is a hard role but learn on champs like Rammus, and Amumu

I remember the 'Get Jinxed' music video is what got me to try League. Login Screen was when Sion's rework just came out. I was like, "Oh my gosh, this login is scary, I don't wanna face him!" lol good times!

ModJikker11/8/2019, 6:23:58 PM1 votes

Tell him to mute all from the start. Introduce him to the magic of the ward and how to check the minimap since that was one of the last things I learned and yet is the most important.

I personally learned a lot from watching the pro scene and analyzing why they did what they did and how it works (not blindly following), so you could suggest that or watching high elo streamers to get an idea of what's going on in the game once he masters the basics.

This too! Start him on the steps to League Enlightenment early.

WoollyWitch11/6/2019, 4:43:15 PM1 votes

Jungles one of the most difficult roles to start with. I'd suggest telling him to experiment with mid or support. In my opinion, those are the easiest roles for someone new to try.

BrokenRayquaza11/6/2019, 4:51:26 PM1 votes

Just have fun, give him a few easy champs and ignore toxicity

Headmans Pride11/6/2019, 4:54:06 PM1 votes

ask if they like to click a lot or have a more passive approach. If they like passive then take malz or urgot. If they like to click a lot give them yasuo or an ADC.

Cind3rkick11/6/2019, 5:13:23 PM1 votes

Play support and make him play a simple adc, not ashe though considering her tricky ult and E.

Best champs for him are probably cailtyn, jinx and twitch. All of them are mostly auto attack based champions with simple spells.

Dont try to team him too much though. Just take him through basic last hitting and warding. Also dont carry him through every game, make him have to work for the win.

Tayzzer11/6/2019, 5:47:21 PM1 votes

I would tell him to try a variety of champs. I only played one when i was new because i knew what he did. now i have 900k mastery on said champ and 40k on next highest because hes the only one I can play well. So yeah i wish i had tried more stuff

iBubbles11/6/2019, 6:43:01 PM1 votes

Ive had a few friends join me in league but none of them ended up sticking with it. One thing to remind them is that they won't be great just starting out, that it takes a long time to really get good at the game (mainly runes, items, abilities usage/dodging, and to let them know that they will get better and everyone starts out bad. Also I recommend sticking with one champion to learn the game, try out a few pick one in the role you like and stick with them for a bit.

GonahtanuGepardi11/6/2019, 8:18:15 PM1 votes

Tell him/her to disable team and all chat. The game will suddenly be a completely wonderful experience with no toxicity ruining it. That's honestly the best move if you want to keep your friend playing the game.

FlashnFuse11/6/2019, 8:21:23 PM1 votes

Xin Zhao is a good starter champion for the jungle. He's very straightforward with a clear win condition of jump on enemy and knock them up.

I've gotta say though, I think Annie is the best champion to learn the game on. You can learn to CS with Q. You can also learn about windows of strength/vulnerability when your stun is ready. I think there are lots of good things to learn by playing Annie
