Reporting players, and how we should change.

My account was recently perma-banned. Honestly, I don't think I deserve it. This isn't a post trying to gain favor for a ban-lift. I could submit a ticket if I wanted to go that route. My people skills aren't the best so I'm just going to avoid the whole run-around tactic Riot uses against you. (They claim a real person responds- but if it is they have a copy&paste response for every issue.) I don't deserve it because nobody does. The report system has become a tool to troll.

So I just had my daughter, my first child. I've been up a few nights without rest and recently I played some games where I totally lost my cool. Not cool. But it wasn't anything too bad, just some frustrations and complaints in the usual "toxic" lingo. Anyways, two back to back games and I had the same attitude so I decided to just put League down for a bit. Clearly I wasn't in the mood and I needed to clear my head before playing. Well next time I logged on I got the perma-ban.

Obviously it wasn't my first offense, but the issue wasn't my behavior. It had nothing to do with anyone really. The real issue was just how "go-to" reporting players has become.

Anyways, forgive the misanthropy for a moment. I want to reach out to you. The community.

Why do we feel that it's necessary to report players? I want to point out how the report system is abused in a way that jeopardizes all of us.

We all talk shit. It's a video game. It's part of the experience. If we allow a computerized system dictate what we can/can not say then the whole experience loses human element. It does not matter who said what, or what the context of your dialogue is. Computers simply recognize cues and simplify it to a breach of conduct. As people, when we judge a person's actions context is extremely important.

A: A man murdered a toddler with his bare hands B: A man accidentally caused fatal harm to a child while the child was attacking him with a kitchen knife

Context. I know it's an extreme example, but I feel like examples should be extreme to make a point. Like South Park. Anyways.

People- Can we just stop with the whole holier-than-thou reporting for self-satisfaction? It's on us to be more conservative with the rules, otherwise we lose ourselves- we lose our liberty to a system that we created. Laws should not be absolute. So long as laws are absolute there can be no justice.

What can we do though? Be more forgiving. It's just a game. And if you're flaming someone for a bad play then don't be a little snitch when they retaliate. Come on now. Really? We're better than that. If you don't like a player- then block them after the game.

Like I said, we all talk shit. And when you throw people under the bus then the road grows wider. And it won't be long until the same rules take you too. If you can forgive, and move on- then the rules don't become so "go-to". If you're not willing to forgive someone for having a bad day then who will forgive you?

Save the reports for the real issues.

To Riot: Stop enforcing so many of these reports. An organization with as much influence as you have is more than aware of the political effect of this. It enables people to generate reports based off popular player behavior. This is damaging to your player base. If you can simply put your foot down, then it will help a lot.

I think I have a decent solution to prevent this tilting type of trolling.

  • If a player hits "report" then both players are reported.
  • If both players are guilty of the report- no punishment shall be issued. Tie it up to casual conversation.
  • Of course making exceptions for extreme dialogue such as hate speech or serious threats

Come on everyone.. this is just ridiculous. I know I can't be the only one tired of this. I think it's on us to make the change.

This guy gets it. League does seem to have a problem with the "report X for whatever".

No. If somebody goes around flaming teammates they can and should be punished. They degrade and ruin the experience for everyone else, and blocking your ears and pretending they don't only lets them harm the experience further. There's no point or usefulness to be found in allowing harassment.
