Thinking about building my first PC

Pretty much the only game that I play is League of Legends. I'm currently playing on an older laptop (though still pretty nice since it's an MSI). I have an Xbox for other games, but would be thinking about making the swap to total PC gaming, so I kind of want to just test the waters building one. I've seen many reports that League is terrible optimized (for how popular the game is, that just strikes me as lazy) for different graphic cards and it really depends on what you get as far as optimization and not so much straight power. I've seen plenty of videos of 1060s out preforming 1080s (with low CPU usage, no bottle-necking).

So, to make a long story short, I want to get about 150 FPS consistently because I want to get a 144hz monitor. My current laptop is running an i5-4200H CPU with an 840M GPU and I can get over 100 FPS all game long. I was thinking of something like a G4560 CPU with a 1050 ti GPU. Will those (and 16gb) of RAM allow me to get my 150 FPS smoothly? Also, is my mobo going to be a problem with this build or should it be fine. I'm not really worried about the build in terms of upgrading it later, as once 4k monitors reach 144hz, I'm probably just going to build a beast mode computer for it (which is another reason I wanna test build with a low end machine).

Here is my current build thought: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/jstew23/saved/LYDbvK

Not bad, lets go through your part list 1 by 1 and identify where you can improve (or not).

  1. Pentium G4560 - the only current Intel CPU that's worth the money, great performance for the price but certainly on the weaker side. If you plan on ditching your XBOX I'd certainly recommend you get at least a true quad core CPU though. Hyper Threading (simulating more cores) is nice (the CPU has 2 additional simulated cores), but real cores are certainly preferable.

  2. Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - probably the best CPU cooler for that price, again great choice. However, you absolutely don't need it since the G4560 comes with a cooler already that's more than enough to keep it cool at all time. I'd only get an extra cooler if I plan on overclocking, which you can't even do if you wanted to. I'd save that $35 and invest it somewhere else.

  3. MSI - B250M Motherboard - Doesn't support overclocking, but has lots of SATA slots which are always nice to have, USB3 headers and over all seems like a good value.

  4. G.Skill 16GB RAM - I find it strange that you would combine such a low end CPU with that much RAM. But since the industry is moving away from 8GB configurations I guess that you could see this as an investment into the future. You could save $50 here and only go for 8GB without ever noticing the difference, and later if you actually need it buy a 2nd RAM stick for a total of 16GB.

  5. Storage - Very nice.

  6. GTX 1050 Ti - Good choice, probably the only GPU out there right now that's worth it's price tag.

  7. Case - has front panel USB3.0 ports, but more importantly, comes with fans.

  8. PSU and Optical Drive - both good.

  9. Windows 10 Home - Don't buy that. You can get Windows 10 keys for about $24 from different shops, completely legal. Just google how to install Windows 10 from a USB stick and then activate it with one of those keys. You can buy keys here for example. Saves you $65 you can invest elsewhere.

  10. Case Fans - your Case already comes with fans which will provide more than enough airflow, also it seems like your motherboard only comes with 2 connectors for case fans. Save those $19.

  11. Rest - Can't comment on those.

What I would do (What I think you should do): Take all the saving I suggested (not the RAM saving) and invest it into a better CPU. Windows 10: $65 Cooler: $35 Case Fans: ~$20 Total: $120 Here's what I'd go for: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/DBwdRG This would leave you with a far superior overclockable CPU and motherboard combination.

you'll get 144 fps the first 10 minutes, the it will drop down to 100, then might even go down even further. League is badly coded.

a solid pc that'll last you or a while would cost around 1.1K CAD so I assume less for ya'll americans
