How solo que could actually be fixed.
I ask at the outset of this for people to please bare with me as I make an attempt to convey my thinking concerning this issue, and even if you disagree I only ask for a few min of your time and thank you in advance. Let me start out by pointing out the basis of 5v5 ranked matches. In a 5v5 you are punished and rewarded based on the collective skill of your whole team, and seeing that each player goes into the game understanding this no one has a problem with it, after all every conventional sport works on that same basis. Now Solo que games unfortunately operate in the exact same way, you are punished and rewarded on the collective skill of 4 random people you most likely never met. So the question is, should this be the case? Allow me to give a crude analogy which I think retains the logic of my argument. Let us assume for a moment that you are the great Micheal Jordan and you go try out for the NBA, and in your tryouts every single member on your team are random people trying out from all over the country, and you lose the game. Now assuming that you were drafted only on the grounds of whether you won or lost, would it be fair to punish the greatest basketball player of all time for the lack of skill within his teammates? How then can we be sure who the best solo players in League of Legends are if players are promoted or demoted based on the RNG of players they have never met? This statistical approach in my opinion is an insult to players who spend countless hours and money to achieve a goal and then told to not tilt or be upset when those hours are wasted. Who should Micheal Jordan be upset with for having his dream ruined in the tryouts when his team failed? The players or the people who devised the system by which he is drafted? How insulting would you feel as Jordan if essentially you were told it was your fault when you score an average of 30.12 points a game? I contend that this method is a terrible approach to any system as well as solo que in League of Legends and fosters rage in the individual regardless of how delusional they may be about their personal skills. Principles are principles, wrong is wrong and what I am insinuating here is that the approach that Riot games has taken is in fact responsible or at the very least culpable for what is, in my opinion, the most toxic game in gaming history. I believe that their is actually a solution to this problem and I am open to hearing any feedback good or bad about my suggestions, Let's test this idea and find its weaknesses.
Every match played in League of Legends records all data relevant to that game, such as damage to champs , heals, damage taken and a host of others. After the match you are scored only on whether you won or lost. You are rewarded on average +20 for a Win and punished -20 for a Loss. What my idea would do is provide another negative or positive score based on the stats that are already recorded, in other words nothing would have to change in League of Legends except one more modifier at the end of every match based on the KDA. Remember these points are arbitrary and can be changed to balance. So just to show how this might work itself out practically, lets give a hypothetical game just to show how this would work. First I will show a simple modifier for each lane and how they would be rewarded or punished on their kda and then a hypothetical game score following that:
Top Lane and Jungle: +1.5 rounded up/down for a kill/assist and -1 per death. Mid Lane : +2/-1/+1 Adc : +2/-1/+1 Support: +1/-1/+2
Now let us apply these modifiers to this Hypothetical game in which this team loses the game:
Top lane 5/4/10 > Score is evaluated as: +8 if rounded up , -4 for deaths , +15 for assists and then another -20 for losing the game, resulting in a total of -1 Mid lane 10/0/2 > +20/-0/+2 and -20 for losing = +2 points Jungler 6/3/3 > +9/-3/+5 and -20 for losing = -9 points Adc 0/10/2 > +0/-20/+2 and -20 for losing = -38 points Support 1/8/16 > +1/-8/+32 and -20 for losing = +6 points AFK > -50 points
Just so you understand what this means, let's assume you are the mid lane who was Challenger last season, hence the good score. You would lose that game but actually go +2 points while the bronze V ADC would lose from -38 to -88 points if he/she went AFK. In other words my system rewarded you because you DESERVED IT! and the ADC was punished because he/she DESERVED IT! and created a huge disparity between you and him/her so they will fall to their natural place in the rankings and you will ascend to where you belong, in Challenger. Would you be upset if you played like a boosted player and went 0/10 and were punished accordingly? how could you be, you are faced with the overwhelming fact that you got what you deserved! Every single player by this modifier is therefore giving powerful incentive to seek to serve their own self interest by playing for themselves, the result of which will be playing as a team. Why would anyone rage under this system? This system gives the individual the power to change their own outcome regardless of his or her teammates without compromising the integrity of a team game. Under this system raging isn't a ban or a chat restriction but a loss of points which every player so desperately wants. Every player will seek to give the kills to the appropriate people who benefit the most from them and by doing so they also get a greater reward for doing so as a support, and the jungler and top lane have no reason to KS because their modifier rewards them equally for a kill and an assist. This change holds the individual responsible without Riot having to address it. This mechanic is essentially the fundamental principle of Capitalism which was so eloquently stated centuries ago by the great Adam Smith in the Wealth of Nations. Yes it is possible to have a team game where every player is given the incentive to play as selfishly as possible which in effect makes them good team players and takes all the excuses away from them. I understand this may be crudely stated and needs work, perhaps more of the stats should be factored in on this modified score, maybe the ramifications of this are greater then what I can perceive from my Soft computer chair, but are we honestly going to leave it as it is and pretend that the current system isn't causing people to leave League of Legends? Every single person deserves to be treated like an individual and rewarded and punished on that basis alone! Thanks for reading
