Where are the grey threads on these boards?
A lot of threads here tend to be black or white (mostly black) and I just don't understand what people hope to achieve with that kind of 'discussion'.
Labelling something as bad or good is just about two opposite ends on the same spectrum. There is a whole lot in between and it is just that middle space which provides depth and credibility to a thread.
Of course this reasoning is not always correct. Of course sometimes things are just bad/good with nothing to counter balance that. Of course it can be beneficial to simplify matters and to make a clean distinction between what is considered bad or good.
However those kind of threads lose meaning and urgency when a lot discussions tend to lean heavily towards those one sided perspectives. When you want to describe a particular element as bad, it is beneficial to also describe the bigger framework surrounding that element (which probably contains something good or at least some nuances).
I am writing this because I am troubled by the amount of 'top' threads which may hold some truth, but are sometimes based on hyperbolic statements and are otherwise lacking in cleverness and nuance.
The recent phenomenon where people state that they are just describing their 'feelings' and thus are allowed to abandon all reason is also something we should think about.
PS. People may call me a hypocrite for writing this, and I wouldn't be able to argue against that since I have also written one dimensional threads in the past. Nevertheless do I hope that you are able to look beyond that and find some truth in this thread.
