The majority of gamers might not engage with the loot boxes in a significant fashion, but the fact that they still buy the game enables the whales.
If people want it to stop, not buying the loot crates isn't enough. They need to not buy the game at all. They need to not buy games made by the same publisher/developer (depending on whose fault it was, often both) at all.
If you buy the game at all, whether or not you buy loot boxes, you're part of the problem. If you regularly buy EA games, then a) why the hell would you do that anyway they all suck and b) you're a bigger part of the problem.
Damn I was hoping to pick this up but after playing the beta and seeing this I'm more than likely going to pass on this. Shame, at least I still have the OG battlefront II on steam.
I'm pretty sure I remember AJ doing an interview with a battlefront dev at gamescon or something like that a few months ago asking about these kinds of things and they said there was nothing to worry about that they were listening to the players and not going to make the same mistakes that they made with the first one.

I can forgive Overwatch doing loot boxes since its nothing but cosmetics, though even there it is a bit much since its a paid game but not Battlefront...not when you actually get stats and bonuses for these. I guess it really didn't matter for me anyways though, since I wasn't gonna buy it anyways but still. We do need to stop these micro-transactions soon, its almost to the point where it can't get any worse.

ive played bf since bad company 1 but after the addition of loot boxes in bf3 ive hated dice and ea more and more. maybe its more ea's fault but at this point this shit is getting ridiculous. now it has become the norm. at least in league the loot boxes are generally good and the game is fucking free to play. now we have to pay 60 $ for a game and pay money on loot boxes to get so we dont have to play 3600 hours (from the video) to get all the weapons (2 for each fucking class...another fucking topic). this is absolutely insane. if you dont do your research on this game before you buy it then youll have dumbasses paying 60$ for a half completed game and then when they realize they need to play 30 hours for 1 gun (if youre lucky) they will stop and have played the game for under 10 hours. not only does ea get your money but then you have idiots that buy the game and arent pissed at this f2p model in AAA titles and end up spending tons of money on this shit. i was really looking forward to this game but im starting to lose faith in dice. i have already lost faith in EA and the direction of these gaming publishers.

They have nothing to lose at this point because they're aware that gamers are compulsive consumers. If people want to win, they'll buy an advantage, looks like we're back in obscure korean MMO days.

Nothing new here, shitloads of mobile games do that with great success (just look at Fire Emblem Heroes/Final Fantasy Brave Exvius/etc., or hell, Japan's iOS app store's top grossing apps are all "gacha" games). It's not a real surprise that mainstream gaming has done the same... that being said a lot of people won't really mind a lot of these power ups (and I'm sure that either Bobba Fett has a very low air time, or that it'll get nerfed) since most of them, from what I've seen, are relatively small power ups.
In any case, I still have at least my Battlefront II copy for PC.
