Planned Changes to Boards Voting and Chronological View

Good morning, everyone!

On Monday, November 20th and Tuesday, November 21st, we'll be looking to move forward with rolling out the following Boards functionality updates to General Discussion and Concepts & Creations. However, nothing is final and what can be done can also be undone. We'd like to welcome your feedback with any changes that are either moving forward or anything that hasn't yet been addressed yet, so we can prioritize and implement them.

#Update 1: Chronological View - "In response to" Feature

https://puu.sh/yoFiE/3c4df38326.png

We've heard your feedback that Chronological View discussions are often times hard to follow, ESPECIALLY in sub-boards that have Discussion View enabled. These changes will serve to significantly improve discussion thread clarity and fluidity.

Something we wanted to find out from you is whether you'd rather have these boxes shown or hidden by default. Additionally, with better ability to follow discussions, we were looking into enabling Discussion View for GD, and we'd need your feedback for this too!

#Update 2: Voting Only From Inside Discussions

https://i.imgur.com/mSouaXB.png

A concern that we've had in the past is that some users upvote and/or downvote threads on the front page before even reviewing the content within that thread. This change will make it harder to do that and encourage voting only once a player has at least opened the thread.

Thanks, and let us know what your thoughts are.

The point of forcing Chronological on GD is to force people to actually read the current discussions and not just the most upvoted discussions. Adding Discussion does not help and detracts from that.

Sounds good to me!

Particularly the part where you have to actually go into the discussion to vote on it. Simply up or down voting based upon a title tends to shut out certain discussion or sets up too many opportunities for click-bait.

Update 1: If you're going to leave the link at the top, you should remove the bottom link of "View Parent" as a redundancy issue. However, this is also assuming the link that is the player's name leads to the parent post, not the player's profile.

Update 2: I do support the idea in general. My issue is that some threads are clearly bait (which will happen often enough still) and now you're forced to open them to down vote.

How about you dont enable discussion view.

Eldeeo11/18/2017, 5:24:54 PM4 votes

Its probably written up there and am blind as a bat but I have to say;

As long as you keep both views on GD (Discussion and Chronological) I wouldn't mind it as much. I know that would cause alot of confusion between posters due to everyone using one or the other, but I can barely use forums when it uses Chronological view, feel like the topic is only focused on the top rated thing (I love to see the salt too!) and you dont really get to see everything people have to bring to that said topic unless you reeeally look deeper.

Im sure I could learn but Id love the have the option

  1. I recall making a post or thread about exactly this in the early days of boards. It's about time; now I'll be able to actually read the other boards without having to leave chronological view.

  2. Another good change.

As others have said, discussion view should not be enabled on GD. One of the big issues with discussion view is that it breaks down in high volume situations and punishes people for being late to the party. It effectively enforces a planned obsolescence on each thread because it does not promote new content, causing a thread to grow stale. This is one of the major reasons why GD exists. Here we can have long-running threads with the new content all in one place.

Discussion view also promotes unhealthy circlejerks. People agree with popular opinions and discussion view makes it possible for a small organized band to control the discussion on a topic. *cough* gameplay *cough*

is it possible to move the upvote/downvote buttons to the bottom right of every post to actually encourage players to read the post?

Pika31011/19/2017, 6:33:15 AM3 votes

Players will still continue voting on discussions without reading them. Titles and thesis' are usually more than enough for a snap decision. The only thing you will accomplish is artificially increasing the number of views.

Am I the only one that find it hard to follow ONLY when Discussion View is enabled...? If there's no Discussion View at all, I have no problems following.

How does that change anything? I don't see the point. Plus you can already see the content by hovering over the title, which can be reason enough to make a choice to up/down vote.

Great job as always, Wuks. I knew you were right for the job when I hired you.

{quoted}

anything that hasn't yet been addressed yet,

GD still defaults to "HOT" sorting, so "recent" threads are getting less views. (Newcomers don't use "recent" sorting, only the GD vets do).

This still hasn't been addressed. It makes posting on GD feel awful, because no one replies to your threads.

I approve of these changes. Well done, Wuks, and thank you for informing us first.

Steps in the right direction.

Oy Wuks, on things that need to be added, can you add a thing to show you what threads you've upvoted/downvoted on the board page without having to go into the thread?

Right now you have to and it gets pretty confusing

Not a slight color difference though, because that will mess with the BEK color thing Fizz is gonna do and probably cause problems for people with color blindness, etc.

Maybe like... a little up/down arrow?

This is exactly the type of change that turned me off from the EU Boards. It makes it impossible to see what is worth reading from the get-go and will make it extremely tedious to see what i'm interested in as public opinion is something that shouldn't be controlled. The votes are there for a reason and i'd like to see. Without this, i'm not going to use these Boards for anything else other than Riot posts. Everything else is going to become irrelevant to me. Especially when you're ignoring the fact you can see the content of the thread by hovering over it's title. Not in it's entirety if it is long enough but you can on shorter ones.

How about you fix real issues like why the fuck is this comment being written at the bottom of the page? Isn't it usually on top? Why is this the case in GD? And why does it reload after i post it or reply to someone? Stupid shit that makes people waste time from their day is ridiculous.

Ironically, i'm propably wasting my time aswell as you guys propably came up with the design choices on EU and that's a dead Board compared to the current NA one. 11/8/4/4/5 upvotes respectively for the top 5 posts. Amazing, guys!

GlobDaBlob11/18/2017, 10:29:18 PM2 votes

Just to clarify, is the first change basically just auto putting the "quote" feature that is added with FEK (I actually don't remember if FEK added that or if everyone has that).

Pretty much what it sounds like to me is that for people without FEK and that use discussion view in other boards, since they don't actually quote the post they are responding to, you are adding in a feature so that people using Chronological view will automatically see it as a quoted response. If so then that is a good change.

Don't add discussion view to GD, we kinda already talked about this.

Also this thread needs to be pinned.

That should be applied to the board as a WHOLE not just these sections.

2nd Chance11/18/2017, 10:46:16 PM2 votes

So long as you don't force Chronological View on GD, because Discussion View only is GD's thing and all, these changes are alright

Busty Demoness11/21/2017, 2:30:59 AM2 votes

Already a lot of bait threads I don't want to click on, but have to in order to down vote.

zk0x11/18/2017, 10:50:44 PM1 votes

Oh, this is where people stay updated about the change. cool!

I like those ideas. It helps people to read my thread, you know? I'm so down with that! [slayer-jinx-wink]

as long as c&c and gd are the only ones that have option 2 i'll be happy.

I like this. Possibly also include a page with time frames where upvotes are counted within the hour or 3 hour period. For instance, instead of one hugeee thread where already popular threads stay there, you can view a chunk of posts created between 3pm-6pm or even smaller, and within those frames allow the most upvoted to remain up top like in normal discussion.

This would allow budding posts to have more fair exposure, so be it they are good posts or necessary they have equal chance to rise to the top of the main page. It's hard to skim through 6-7 pages of posts at once weeding for good ones. This could also allow people to more easily revisit posts they like which didn't get popular. [sg-miss-fortune]
