How does Blizzard keep up so many games?

Riot can't even keep a rotating gamemode going...

Plz stop feeding us lies about how you don't have the resources. You have one game, and half of the employees of blizzard.

Blizzard has been in the business longer and has better experience in effectively running a company. Riot expanded incredibly fast off the success of league and likely has some management issues that keep them from being as efficient as they could be.

half of the employees of blizzard.

Well they don't count if they aren't good employees. That said, they really lack manpower at all.

Riot is basically a one trick until they prove otherwise.

Just Jangle6/25/2018, 9:25:43 PM20 votes

Yet, feel free to go to any of the Blizzard forums and theres people bitching about the balance from each game.

DrCyanide6/25/2018, 8:22:07 PM10 votes

The key there is separate games.

Balance updates to Heroes of the Storm don't effect the balance of characters in Overwatch, Diablo, Warcraft, or Starcraft, or vice versa. They're all isolated games where different stats and abilities are acceptable.

League of Legends is one game, and you expect the champions to behave the same in different modes, including Featured Game Modes. Could you imagine if Nasus didn't have his Q on a featured game mode because it was unbalanced? Blizzard can do that with their games, Riot can't.

Who is included in the broad umbrella of Riot Games that you miss the equivalent of for individual Blizzard games? Riot games likely includes all the people doing networking, LCS, and R&D. How does the total number of Blizzard employees compare to the total number of Riot employees.

A quick search in google shows me this about Riot Number of employees 2,500 (2018)

However Blizzards employee count doesn't come so easily. The most recent total number I could easily find is In 2012 Blizzard had 4,700 employees, with offices across 11 cities including Austin, Texas, and countries around the globe. and As of June 2015, the company's headquarters in Irvine, California had 2,622 employees.

Where did you find the employee count for their individual games?

muted team chat6/25/2018, 10:34:11 PM6 votes

Because each game generates blizz income and therefore supports it's own staff...

...so yeah, pretty obvious.

It comes down to the management. Riot management have no idea what they are doing or how to handle a company and make it work. They got too big too fast and look like monkeys humping a football. It's really that simple. If Riot were a publicly traded company they would have to make changes but since they aren't they can keep going like they are.

Naon6/26/2018, 1:25:00 PM2 votes

The people from Blizzard that work for Riot are not working for Blizzard for a reason. They were let go, but to make it look better they "resigned." If you played Vanilla WoW or some of the older patches that had the old staff from Riot on Bliz, you would see the major differences with how the game was done.

There is a reason that Blizzard can keep expanding and Riot is actually losing players. The only appeal for this game is that it's a F2P but without a community.

kurthl33t6/26/2018, 1:08:44 PM2 votes

Where are you getting your info on numbers of employees for both companies? The best number I can find for number of employees at Blizzard is six years old, before Hearthstone and Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm, which would have all brought in more staff.

SpecterVonBaren6/25/2018, 11:10:42 PM2 votes

8tsp almost like they don't have all these different games managed by the same people isn't it?

aren't they pretty much just a group of small companies? AFAIK noone working on wow has anything to do with overwatch for example. And yes riot is a big company, but honestly they're not one of the biggest names in gaming.

Blizzard is probably where shit like Bethesda, Ubisoft, etc are at, riot ain't there yet. They're pretty much a million dollar indie company at this point.

And can we not act like expanding a company is the same as taking a piss in your backyard?

I think the reason Riot has given that they stopped doing the Rotating Game modes was playrate and balance and stuff. The usual fair. They probably wanted to decrease queue times on weekends for norms/ranked and also didn't want the hassle of trying to balance the rgm. I mean if that is true its a bit of a weak excuse but meh. Also as far as employee numbers go its not like they all do the same thing. Like there are the people working on live balance, the people on the pbe end, IT, story people, concept people, designers for new champs, teams working on reworks, people working on new maps, people working on the client, organizers for competitive events, etc. So its not like they just have free resources to shift around. The employees have one job and unless they have a team specifically made for Rotating Game Modes they need to pull people away from other projects thus tossing a wrench in the works. Basically employee count doesnt matter if you don't have the manpower in the right places for a certain project.

Pika Fox6/26/2018, 1:11:15 PM1 votes

Rotating game mode stuff is usually special off the walls stuff like having 5 of one champ or massive CDR etc, so even adding 1 new champion means they now have to test all the possible interactions and fix things that occur because now you can have more than 1 of x. In the base game you never had to figure out what should happen with 2 brands and their passives. In one for all, now you do.

PowerSlave9936/26/2018, 1:24:55 PM1 votes

Becasue Blizzard is better company and it was founded a long time ago. People love their story's,etc. and they will play anything Blizzard gives. I play Heroes of the Storm and it's a fun game.

UnknownTerritory6/26/2018, 1:34:26 PM1 votes

They keep because they are well organized

Thefrostyviking6/26/2018, 2:30:35 PM1 votes

At this point blizzard is like this super company that just owns several smaller ones, and each of those smaller ones takes care of a game by themselves.

So if balance is better in say overwatch or hots compared to league then either studio behind those is currently either having less of a mess to deal with or they came up with clever solutions.

Overall blizzard just overlooks the smaller ones under their name,,,,,,they just happen to be somewhat experienced and stable due to having been around for a while x)

Quiet Dude6/26/2018, 2:46:29 PM1 votes

Blizzard is a very successful company that deserves all their success. People bitch about each of their games in their forums, "WoW is dead, OW is dead, Diablo 3 is dead" yet millions log into that battle.net launcher every day.

Riot is a new company that has yet to hit it's second wind. We don't see a lot of what goes behind the scenes, but the fact is Riot seems to be preparing for something pretty big. They have invested a lot in the story team.

I wouldn't be surprised if Riot announces a new game soon or another media venture like a television show set in the League Universe animated by the Avatar/Voltron dudes or some shit.

No they needed a way to have an event so they could sell skins. They just reverted RGM back to event only thing.

HaIlMonitor6/26/2018, 6:51:25 PM1 votes

A huge part of it is the name. I always joke that Blizzard could poop in a box and sell it for $60 as long a it had warcraft or Starcraft in the name.

Hexs Fortune6/26/2018, 7:24:45 PM1 votes

Quality > Quantity

There's a reason Hots still loses to League, despite carrying the Blizzard licenses

nGio6/26/2018, 8:25:28 PM1 votes

RGMs hurt queue health for ranked, and Riot has all of their eggs in the esport basket, so unfortunately we're forced to play LC$ Simulator. The SC2 team is down to 3 interns running it, and there are hundreds of custom games being hosted at any point that you login. Riot could definitely put up permanent RGMs and let us choose what we want to play, but they need us running Sim to push the competitive down everyone's throats.

You don't need a dedicated employee to oversee every single match being played. They could just open up a SC2 Arcade style of RGMs that have already been developed and push the on button. They won't though. Instead we'll get excuses about new clients, billion dollar indie companies, and a hiring shortage.

Riot isn't stupid, and they aren't confused about how to push an on button. They are intentionally keeping shit vaulted, because LC$ Simulator is the only fucking thing that matters.
