Also, if Earth is sentient, I think being billions of years old probably will also mean they will be far more tolerant and understanding than any of us petty humans.
The Earth would probably just patiently wait until we "get it"; while all of the other disasters like climate change, animals going extinct, water and food crisis and whatnot, is more like the Earth's sickness symptoms, rather than actively trying to punish the humans.
That would be my take if I were to assume Earth is a sentient entity.
