Why is Riot against cursing in-game when they're really vulgar and mean people outside the game?

Just wondering why you don't hear much in the way of profanity in League of Legends client or character dialogue other than Kled, and even then it is tame and largely played for comedy with the bleep effects.

Apart from homophobic or racist slurs, Riot employees when not interacting with serious PR curse a lot. They say fuck, shit, piss, bitch, %%%%, ass anything you can think of along those lines. Even directed at people criticizing them. But the game for some reason can't allow that. Xayah cursed a lot in dialogue that was omitted from the game for example.

The game has a set rating (T for Teen) that needs to be maintained. If they go pass it, it'll be rated M which means only 18 and up is suppose to play.

The boards, however, does not have an ESRB rating, so cussing is allowed. They just can't flame or be downright mean and toxic to people directly or else they'll lose their jobs.

But, they can joke with you, have fun, and be human.

I don't think they do, at least not what I'm aware of.

Unless you mean streamers, which are ofc not directly related to nor representing Riot.

The last time a Rioter was being actually mean, it got into a PR disaster the the guy was let off the job.

Riot isn't against swearing in the game, where did you hear this? You can say "Ugh, fuck my life " or "Look out for Lee, he just kicked the shit out of me," just fine. It's just when you start calling other players shitheads, fuckwits, fucking morons, assholes, etc when it crosses the line. General, undetected swearing is fine, just like in everyday life. It only goes south once you start using it to directly insult people.

In regards to the champions swearing that's different. They're absolutes, and a ratings board can use those absolutes against a company. That's why most champions are sparse on swearing.

Since I started playing in in/before S1 I haven't once had an issue come up with my in game profanity. It's not whether you choose to use profanity, it's more about how you choose to use the words. Don't use them to shit-talk people and you'll generally be ok.
