Let's talk about Aatrox

So, I'm gonna be frank right off the bat; I have not played League that long. I picked it up and put it down many times before only to really get invested near the end of Season 7.

As I have been playing, I have learned so much about the game from it's rather storied lore to it's rather strange meta and tactics. (Tactics specific to the couple of roles I play that is, but still.)

I watched the video of the Aatrox Aatrox trailer on the launcher, watched the video of his moveset and interactions and even watched some reactions to it but it was the video by Hashinshin that got me to really look into Aatrox as a character.

Why is the rework of Aatrox's voice so disconnected from how he's written?

Example; From Aatrox's own biography page, Quote; "Just when all hope seemed lost, Aatrox appeared among the ranks of the Protectorate. With but a few words, he urged the soldiers to fight to the last before throwing himself into battle."

Further in the bio, Quote; "Aatrox vanished after that battle, but the Protectorate army's newfound fury did not. Their surprising triumph led to many more until they were able to finally return home victorious. Their countrymen hailed them as heroes, but though they had saved their entire civilization from destruction, darkness lingered in the mind of each warrior. Something within them had changed. "

And another; From Tryndamere's bio, Quote; "He (Tryndamere) staggered to his feet - barely able to take hold of his sword - steeling himself for the decisive confrontation with the shadowy being. But the dark figure did not even lift his blade, and instead gave Tryndamere a knowing smile as he withdrew into the shadows. That was the last time the barbarian ever saw his nemesis."

So, from all these my immediate impression of Aatrox, including how he was originally voiced in his original design, tell me he is an enigmatic figure that is much more reserved. Calm and collected due to being so certain of the end result. It reminds me of a warrior general. And now the rework videos are out and, upon watching his interactions I can feel none of that original intent in this voice. This voice makes Aatrox seem like a lumbering devilish being set on destruction of all things while not sounding intimidating in the slightest while doing so.

Why? Why was it necessary to make Aatrox sound so loud and overblown. He doesn't sound like the composed warrior general like his lore indicates. He sounds like someone egotistical and combat-prone. He seems like a dog that's all bark and no bite (though I'm sure his play style would say otherwise). But for someone who seems to have influenced so many conflicts. So much war and devastation and corrupted so many people I just don't understand how this would be the way he acts or speaks.

What do you folks think?

That's his old lore, which was made before the concept of Darkin was full established. You shouldn't be comparing his reworked voice with his old story, as there's obviously going to be a disconnect

As much as Id like to agree, Krol has the right idea. Then, Aatrox was the being and not the weapon as riot made darkin to be after some time, as the lore evolved as time went on the darkin became being set on destruction and chaos. At that point Aatrox became out of place. While ill say that he is a bit over done it makes more sense for his type now.

I will admit though, I like the idea that Trynd was supposed to be the being that Aatrox took as host, makes more sense as a nemisis from a long lost battle

while I can understand the confusion, there's a LOT of outdated things still in the lore, hell I think fiddles noct and lee are all still tied into the institute of war ffs (could be wrong but I digress) while he is still being seen as a force of nature its changed to more like what nightmare from soul calibur is essentially. he isn't this aimless war hungering monster anymore, he's a weapon or a spirit inside the weapon that now he's free there is alot of hell to pay. you can tell by his interactions that to some extent he is still the oldest or atleast the most thoughtful darkin (varus is a bit outdated atleast when it comes to the vo department and rhaast was kinda the spark for the revitalization of the darkin story) you can tell this with some of his interactions with void creatures and zoe, tho I would like more stories that go in depth when he relaunches. why did he kill trynds tribe, how many darkin are left, what is his purpose or his goals, and why is he the only one allowed to say shit in league?
