The Mystery of the Mystery Champion Gift Limitations Has Been Solved

Hi there guys. So, for those obviously aware, Riot recently changed the Mystery Token from normal to gifting limitations. That means unless you have at least 10 of the random thing you're trying to get, you won't be able to buy any of the randomizer token. This is very important with the Mystery Champion item for two reasons.

  1. Prior, you could buy the token then unlock for a random champ. It was a simple process and rewarded you if you had less champions to get. This is intended as someone who has almost all champs invested both time and money into the game, which is a fair thing to give to your players.

  2. You were able to stockpile tokens prior so you can use them on future content as the new BE system was being changed to. However, based on a statement on the forums that tokens would only apply to champions currently released during their time, a lot of people, including myself, chose to hold back on that to see what Riot's response was to it. Now it looks like those who did buy them are now being rewarded, and those who asked riot if this was true have been punished.

Then something happened on thursday. Riot did a status that they had to disable the Mystery Champion Shards. At the time, about a few minutes before this happened, I used the Mystery Champion (I had less than ten champs left I might add), and received Ivern. When I attempted to purchase again, the token stopped working.

"Error, you can not purchase the token at this time." I was confused why this was happening, but seeing the status, I would wait until things resolved. When it was finally fixed, I attempted to buy the Mystery Token. Then it happened:

"You can only have ten champions to use this token."

They had changed the Mystery Token to gifting limitations. I thought this was an error, so I checked the forums. Fortunately, others had the same issue as me, so I sent in a support ticket, while also giving a question to a riot member here on the reddit forums. Here are the responses:

In summary, we finally got an official answer, which is not a good one for all of us. Mystery Tokens are now limited by how big your remaining champion buy pool is, and also they have chosen to endorse those who stockpiled tokens prior while spitting in the face of people like myself who were patiently waiting for a clear response from Riot. So the very store made for long time players has a counter productive feature of that if you have nearly all the content, you can't use its special items anymore.

But I guess this all comes down to the fact that Tencent now runs the show, and they do not care about playing fair with their own community. They will nickel and dime us until we're dead without considering the player satisfaction and the support we have given this game for years. I'm very disappointed that greed has overtaken the company and I hope others see the truth of their dishonesty.

This is rather all distasteful and lacking class from them. Then again the whole gaming industry as of late is filled with nothing but gutter trash cretins and terrible decisions.

I was majorly disappointed that I can't buy the mystery champion things for the last three champs I need (but don't necessarily wanna blow 18,900 BE on). Like jeez, Rito, throw be a damn bone.

I'm irritated by it but also, like... I wasn't spending my former IP pool on anything else but champions, so this only means I lose a small discount on the F2P currency. Also, and I hope this holds true but both of my level-up capsules have given me three Champ shards, so if they can still be reforged into a random champ, I can just use those for new releases (in theory, won't know until Zoe unlocks).

So I'm not too upset about the change to be honest Surprised and a bit irritated, but I'll live.

Like you said they become greedy and they don't respect their community anymore, Riot has become interested just in money and they are even getting back what they previously gifted, read this one https://boards.euw.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/off-topic-en/rBQ79uoh-so-thats-how-riot-stole-our-orange-essence

I random rolled the last 8 champions, using "Mystery Champion" for 3950BE and thought how it was awesome of Riot to give me a way to get the rest of the 6300 champions without having to spend as much of the new currency!

My internet was on the fritz for a week and a half or so. The technician that fixed my connection literally left my place 30 minutes ago. Excited, I log into league. I see Zoe is out and am excited to get her for 3950BE instead of 7800BE. I click "Random Champion" with smiling eyes. Then boom, cockblocked.

If it wasn't for the fact that ability to acquire Orange Essence was dramatically decreased, or that this is another way that makes the low ball refunds players received for their runes even less valuable I could turn a blind eye to this change. This change is actually extremely bogus considering it wasn't and issue until they noticed it and "hotfixed" it. I'll continue to play but won't be spending money on RP.
