All of my arguments have failed to convince most of you no matter how convincing I make them so I felt it necessary to link this video to do the convincing for me since most of you hold Extra Credits in high-regard as "paragons of game design" for some reason.

And if you look at an unrelated video to this subject entirely and you'll likely find this to be a pattern with most EC videos

There's nothing wrong with lootboxes.

I'm pretty sure the EC crew is becoming industry shills, in part because game companies have sponsored them in the past.

Lootboxes are bad because of how prevalent they are. If they were like Riot loot boxes, which I can ignore, then I have no issue with them. If they are for game content and "extra benefits" I think it's a bad gig. Like those loot boxes that let you finish games faster and give you access to things that should have been in the base game but weren't. Imagine I play a game and talk to my buddy about it. I tell him about how challenging it is and show him this really cool thing I unlocked through hours of playing. He tells me he paid 5.99 for it at the start of the game, unimpressed.

Games like HearthStone have to go with loot boxes, is part of the experience. They are basically simulating getting an actual physical card pack. If this were not in place you would buy 30 cards and be done

Part of the reason people wont pay $80 for a standard edition game is because they know they are going to prob shell out another 10-30 right at release for the first DLC (you know the stuff that used to come months later), so they feel like games are not complete at launch....and most games are buggier than hell anymore.

The problem is we the consumers have already seen the gaming industry churn out more and more crap games and still nickel and dime us with DLC (actual content), expansions, aesthetics, boosters, etc. And now we are expected to shell out more money for a CHANCE at getting something cool? No ty.

EC's argument boils down to "Games are so expensive to make, that developers need more money from exploitative gambling boxes."

To which I (and everyone else in the comments) have to point out: The problem is that every game is being built as this ridiculous shoot-for-the-moon endeavor with a bloated budget and no restraint, and usually ends up being mediocre at best as a game. Meanwhile, Nintendo has been absolutely killing it for decades because they know how to keep their god damn budgets under control. The "AAA" industry is crumbling because of it's own hubris and lack of restraint, and that's fine. It shouldn't be this way, it wasn't like this years ago when the video game market was stronger.
