Tips for getting back into the game after a multi-year hiatus?

I played league as my main game for a couple of years back in seasons 3-5. However, I haven't played any games since then — and that's about three years.

Getting up to date Obviously, I'll be missing out on champions (Tahm Kench came out about when I stopped playing... that's fifteen new champions I've never seen), any reworks of systems like items, et cetera. I'll certainly have no idea what is going on with the meta.

So is there any way that I can find a recap of all that has changed over the past three or four seasons? If I just read the patch notes, I'd still be reading when season 10 comes out. Is there perhaps some website/youtube channel/whatever that does the big picture for each season?

Getting back in practice What do you think is the best strategy for redeveloping my skills? Is it better to hop on a smurf and level it to 30 just to regain familiarity? Perhaps it would be better to just play normals on my main and just take the losses? I'd love any input or tips you guys have.

Thanks — any input is welcome!

my tip is to quit again and come back when they fix the steaming pile of dung that the game has become after runes reforged.

My tip for getting back into the game: Don't.

Use sites like lolalytics and op.gg to learn the meta builds and rune setups. That will at least take some of the strain off relearning things.

I can tell you what I would do, I would just simply read the patch notes since then. It wouldn't take that long, especially as we wouldn't to pay attention to any of the tweaks.

It would only be a few things per patch that would be off interest for you e.g. Patch 8.13 Aatrox was reworked, Bounties start at 2 kills, and Kindred has the heal back (also there's a champion named Kindred now).

Honestly, just play on your main account, try with some easy champions First, like Garen and Annie, to familiarize yourself with the basics again, after that play whatever you want experiment with the new runes to have fun and not to have lol be anti fun for you, look at some guides for your favorite champion/s and just have fun, just playing and youll be good as old

I'd try playing some bot games and ARAMs to get accustomed to the basics of League again, personally. I also feel like checking out League Youtuber videos actually would be a great way to learn what champions have changed.

I'd also see if you could find the champions you used to play often and see what they're like now, how they're built, and see if you can garner a since of familiarity with them. :)

Why would you want back in after getting out? Most people play this game due to sunk cost fallacy, people are extremely unhappy with the balance state of the game right now, and it has recently been publicized that Riot has perpetuated extremely toxic company policies that shouldn't be supported. Now seems like the worst possible time to get back into the game, wait like 6 more months and see if Riot can clean up their act.

i did something similar

  1. check the change log for your main, learn if anything big has happened.

  2. go into the practice tool, get your farming method back down i spent 30 mins working on it, but honestly just 10 minutes a day for a week is enough.

  3. look up the meta build for your champ using any statistics site

  4. play norms whilst watching/reading about the current meta and why it is to get your game knowledge back to pace. target 1 trick streamers/ content creators. even the smallest changes effect them the most

You could just play all the new/reworked champs in bot games. That way you have a basic idea of their kits and you can redevelop your mechanics. I doubt the game will be so hard to get back into that you need a new account or any serious research.
