Alright folks I need a new anime to watch I am caught up on all mine

Laughing Fish·8/7/2018, 6:15:59 PM·8 votes·6,467 views

Greetings! I need recommendations for a new series to start. I would prefer something that has a lot of fights, some character drama though that doesn't need to be the focus, and that has visually appealing characters (Not just talking about fan service, like Attack on Titan has no fan service yet is very visually appealing). I am considering Naruto as it is one of the most popular animes of the genre, but it is also very long so wanted opinions before I started it.

For reference, my favorite animes are:

1: Fairy Tail 2: My Hero Academia 3: Attack on Titan 4: Noragami 5: The Devil is a part timer

If you haven't watched Bebop yet it's got all that you're asking for.

I also rather liked One Punch Man and it would fit the bill.

Given your requirement of "visually appealing", I can think of a few examples:

You can watch Shokugeki no Souma (literal meaning: Souma of the Food Fight. Localised: Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma). You watch it for the tiddys, and stay for the delicious magic and actual good plot. It's about competitive cooking, you can think of it like TV shows in veins of MasterChef, but with far more organic drama elements.

https://usercontent1.hubstatic.com/13161162_f520.jpg http://images.sgcafe.net/2015/04/xsjuzstrh.png https://thefantasygamer.files.wordpress.com/2016/07/food-wars-lol.jpg?w=400&h=200&crop=1

Or you want something completely vanilla, I highly recommend Mushishi (literal meaning: Bug master (?); there is no literal translation of the term, especially when the "mushi"/"bug" in the series is actually referring to supernatural creatures more akin to that of youkai). The series is about this wandering doctor who goes around doing some things related to these "mushi" creatures; it's episodic for the most part, and each episode is mostly an independent story of its own.

https://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/mushi-shi/images/6/61/46bf0f0cb9b74ef88afecb3729e82352.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20140320145643 https://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/mushi-shi/images/d/d2/Vlcsnap-2013-05-17-20h42m24s148.png/revision/latest?cb=20140226135546 https://moesucks.files.wordpress.com/2014/04/mushishi-zoku-shou-0408.jpg

Speaking of "vanilla", please also watch Aria (NOT Hidan no Aria), just Aria. It's a sort of utopian slice of life story that is very slow paced, so if you're into that kinda stuff (my brother is allergic to it for some reason. He's more "stuff happens" kind of person); it's super good for treating depression and anxiety, though. It's about the people living on the fictional 24th century terraformed Mars, and the main cast mostly consist of the gondola rowing/'water guide' for the city/country of "Neo-Venezia" on this 24th century Mars. A visually appealing story both to the eyes and your heart.

https://nefariousreviews.files.wordpress.com/2014/10/aria-1-venice.png?w=672&h=372&crop=1 https://i.ytimg.com/vi/YBsTKuZ4zRA/maxresdefault.jpg https://atmafunomena.files.wordpress.com/2016/06/yande-re-62506-aria-mizunashi_akari-2.jpg?w=640

And speaking of "visually appealing", one can not go without mentioning Violet Evergarden, arguably THE most visually intensive serial anime so far. It's more of a "talking" story, though, where it's about post-war recovery. Though based KyoAni never cease to impress with over-budgeted visuals vistas with real magic.

https://i1.wp.com/www.aniprop.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Violet-Evergarden-07-Large-27.jpg?fit=1280%2C720 https://honeysanime.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Violet-Evergarden-1.jpg http://lostinanime.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Violet-Evergarden-01-12-1280x720.jpg

Speaking of magic, there's the Mahoutsukai no Yome (literal meaning: Magus/Magician's Bride. Localised The Ancient Magus' Bride). The seamless transition between modernity and magic, very alluring indeed. It's about the female protagonist being literally sold to the male protagonist (the "Magus" as mentioned by the title) as a slave, in the modern era, because some people still in the past with that kinda stuff. Then well, characters get to learn to know and respect each other, and stuff. It's super visually impressive, with a good story in a sort of surreal setting.

http://otakukart.com/animeblog/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/mahou-tsukai-no-yome-anime-feature-e1475591249608.jpg https://xenodude.files.wordpress.com/2017/10/mahoutsukai-no-yome-ep-1-3.png?w=730&h=550&crop=1 https://i.ytimg.com/vi/n4gmjOUcPMA/maxresdefault.jpg

Speaking of surreal, how can I not mention the Houseki no Kuni (literal meaning: Country of Jewels. Localised: Land of the Lustrous), the most visually impressive CGI anime to date that certainly wow'ed more than enough people with its impressive visuals, combined with the interesting setting and plot of the story that revolves around a world where everyone is an anthropomorphic humanoid gemstone. It takes you on a trip, a very good trip.

https://i0.wp.com/angryanimebitches.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/houseki-no-kuni-1000015.png?resize=466%2C262 http://otakucalendarjapan.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/x6-1024x576.jpg https://cdn.inquisitr.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Houseki-no-Kuni-Season-2-Release-Date-Land-Of-The-Lustrous-Anime-Spoilers-Based-On-The-Manga.jpg

Speaking of trips, coming next right up is of course, Kino no Tabi (Kino's Journey). It's about a girl and her talking motorcycle, Hermes, going on adventures and traveling from countries to countries; though it's called "countries" though some viewers have wondered what kind of traveling Kino is actually doing because it would seem she travels across time and space rather than just the physical distance. Much like the suggestion above, this is also more of a surreal experience, but don't fret, because the journey is still worth the shot!

Kino no Tabi also has 2 adaptations so far. WATCH BOTH. Here are the links to the 2003 adaptation and the 2017 adaptation. Because they are adapted from different chapters/stories of the light novels, and the few ones that do overlap, the newer one is more faithful, but the old one is more insightful in some areas.

You may also notice the slightly different character design of Kino, that's mostly because the depiction/illustration of Kino has changed over the years in the light novel. The appearance of Kino in both adaptations are based on their respective year of the character's illustration history.

Speaking of the shot? What's that? Oh it's Sora no Woto (Sound of the Sky). The anime equivalent of All Quiet on the Western Front in a way, the story is set in an alternate WW1 setting (though there is a catch implied in the story) centering around a group of border patrols that's actually a little bit away from the frontline but is nevertheless closely linked to it. It's still a slice of life story at its core, but one can not avoid the serious undertone in the background.

https://i1.wp.com/animewallpaperstock.com/wallpaper/03sa/soranowoto/soranowoto0024.jpg https://fakemorisummer.files.wordpress.com/2015/09/elysiumsora-no-woto-ep10bd-720p-aacabfde4cc-mkv_snapshot_22-17_2015-09-10_02-38-45.png?w=620 https://0darker0.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/sora-no-woto-9a.png

Did I just mention serious undertone? Well, you can't avoid Haibane Renmei (Charcoal Feather Federation). Another surrealist entry to this list, the story describes a world in which people are "born" into it seemingly already has a child or sometimes an adult, with only 1 memory prior to their waking, and everyone in this world has grey wings and a halo.

https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/s/common/uploaded_files/1459280644-50edeb6a09497c549540d07db8d3aae8.jpeg https://canime.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/haibane4.jpg https://images3.imgbox.com/1d/b9/HL48VqbL_o.jpg

But "enough with the "weird" entries, SEKAI", I heard you say. Alrighty, let me introduce you to the slice of life series called Nodame Cantabile. A story about musicians, their lives and development, and of course, romance.

https://nefariousreviews.files.wordpress.com/2017/02/nodame-cantabile-orchestra.jpg https://www.anime-planet.com/images/anime/screenshots/nodame-cantabile-1070-1.jpg https://www.japanator.com/elephant/ul/9004-nodame_cantabile_01.jpg

Seeing this is the direction we're taking now, let's not stop with just that! I will also introduce you to Barakamon (there is no literal translation in standard Japanese, but it can be roughly translated to "An Easygoing Person" in a particular Japanese dialect). Fitting for its name, it indeed takes place in the countryside. It's about a modern-day esteemed and proud Japanese calligrapher losing his shit at a convention and is punished by the latter by "exiling" him into the countryside, and subsequently he learned to see things he otherwise wouldn't prior to going there.

http://lostinanime.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Barakamon-01-2-1024x576.jpg https://kpopkhopmusic.files.wordpress.com/2016/12/barakamon-02-seishuu-calligraphy-japanese-handwritten-script.jpg?w=700 https://i.ytimg.com/vi/0cTCrnkT4VQ/maxresdefault.jpg

Here are some I would recommend. You seem to like the get beat, train, get stronger type anime and all of these have that except FMA and Code Geass which which are just all around great.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Hunter X Hunter Hajime no Ippo Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Code Geass

LankPants8/8/2018, 2:15:29 AM1 votes

My personal recommendations for the more shonen action style series that you mostly seem to watch would be Code Geass, Overlord and one which I'm surprised I haven't seen mentioned yet, Gurren Lagann.

A suggestion you'd probably enjoy but which isn't a perfect match to those series stylistically would be Konosuba. It's a primarily comedic series with a few action elements and some character drama added in, it's also one of the best of the comedy genre.

For visually appealing it's hard to go past Violet Evergarden, Your Name. and Land of the Lustrous, although these series are heavy departures from what you've listed as your favourites, being more on the dramatic side rather than action. The only one that has any sort of significant fighting is LotL, but all three have very strong character drama.

On the topic of character drama some of the strongest I've seen are A Silent Voice, Re:Zero, Evangalion, Stein's Gate and Toradora, although none of these series would fit everything you want other than maybe Re:Zero. A Silent Voice and Toradora are very solidly rooted in romance although they're both amongst the best of the gerne, Stein's Gate also lacks action throughout the series setting up as a character driven thriller. While Eva does have a lot of what you want it's very old and visually dated as such. These 5 are all amongst my personal favourites and although they may not fit your tastes at all I still think they're certainly good enough to warrant a mention.

Naruto but skip the fillers. there's a sequel called shipuuden which is 40% filler

Bleach but skip the fillers (i think less than half the length of naruto).

Danganronpa (not so much action as it is ridiculously fun and it has trials in it, mystery cases). just read the synopsis for this one

One Piece but skip the fillers. also it's really really long, it's about a dude that stretches himself almost as much as the animators stretch the episodes for content. this starts about halfway through i think.

Dragon Ball Z but don't skip the fillers xD good shit.

i also suggest watching everything in japanese with english subtitles with the exception of dragon ball z

I forgot some good ones, but it is what it is. Enjoy mate

VermillionWolf8/8/2018, 2:29:04 AM1 votes

I enjoyed Darling in the Franxx alot .Has action and some romance, kinda mysterious. An ongoing series is called 'angels of death' which seems awesome but doesnt fit your choices.

Jerry SeinfeId8/8/2018, 3:11:09 AM1 votes

This new gokudolls shit. It's funny as hell. about some yakuza who fuck up so they gotta become japanese idols.

Banana fish is cool, kinda gay but not gay tho. it's weird.

if you haven't and are up for a long ride ofc: Naruto and one piece atleast, dragonball and DBZ, Bleach. Ya kno the classics. they're pretty much the closest to hero aca/fairytail.

If you want a solid story with good visuals until you're past the movies where they butcher the animations: Berserk (better off just reading it really)

Shaman king, again the manga is alot better because the ending got cuz short as there were issues with the manga. but i can't not recommend it, it's always been one of my favourites.

If you're in for happy fun and exploring with cute looking chibi's. Made in Abyss (this is totally not a gruesome anime...)

The toaru series are pretty fun to and follow the underdog series on one side. it's pretty much you get magic from god, you get superpowers from science. I prefer railgun because i prefer the science side and the clones stuff is so sad, alexa play To aru no railgun intro. Railgun has alot of "girly moments" but they never last long.

Dimension W is really rad too. It's sci fi tho, kinda difficult to explain but the main character is rad and the world is pretty cool. Problems with infinite energy and dimensions n stuff.

And now the one i'd rather not say since i realized what it's fucking english name is: I it wrong to pickup girls in the dungeon. Listen, i didn't ask for this either. I know it sounds bad but hear me out. I'm a total sucker for "we're adventurers so let's go into this dungeon/tower with multiple levels" typa anime, this one has a nice world and system.

Desert punk. This one's amazing. You seem like the type who loves his mofuckin nakama and stands by them always anime. this is the exact opposite. Desert punk is somewhat of a bounty hunter/treasure hunter. He does what he does for 2 things: Money and Women. And the guy actually sticks to it which makes it so beautifull.

Beck - Mongolian Chop Squad This is about a kid getting into guitar playing and a band. This follows their life somewhat. It's actual slice of life, There's parts that are somewhat less relatable with crime and all that but it's believable. Great soundtrack

Kill La Kill & Tengen Toppa Guren lagan Same studio. both are incredibly fast paced and tell action packed over the top stories. Kill La Kill focuses on a star rating based school and city attached to it. The other one is a fricking emotional rollercoaster that will have you laughing and kick you in the gut the next episode. oh and the only mech anime i'd ever watch.

Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop

Classics, great story, art and a beauriful blend of cultural references. SC is based in Japan at the end of the samurai era but everything has a little hip hop twist to it. Mugen fights with moves inspired by breakdancing while Jin is a classic samurai (ronin actually, fun fact non of them are actual samurai).

CB is a jazzy scifi in the style of starwars more in the fact that it's gritty. It's no shiny plastic/metal everywhere. It's like now but a bunch of fancy tech added.

Assassination classroom

super being created by humans destroys half of the moon, threatens to blow up earth unless a bunch of students can beat him by a specific date. He also happens to be the comic relief character and the perfect teacher.

Durarara!!

Follows a bunch of different characters and how they're connected to each other. It's pretty fun. And they got this ezreal lookin dude who's rad as hell.

Gunnm/battle angel alita

I've only read the manga but i just found out there actually is a 90's anime of it. Probably gonna watch that myself the manga is great tho. Bonus points you'll get to be mad when the live action is garbage.

One punch man and Mob Psych 100 Same guy, you know one punch man, Mob is pretty much the same but a psychic and he doesn't realize he actually is that strong. His strenth is based on how he's feeling.

Megalo Box

I don't like sports anime, i love this one.

Afro Samurai You like samurai? you like great art? you like samuel L jackson? you like fast paced? 5 Episodes, MAin character is voiced by Samuel L jackson. There is only an english DUB so it's actually good too. To keep it simple: There's headbands in the world, 2 of them are one of a kind. The n1 and n2. Only the n2 Has the right to challenge the n1, so what does a lil boy do when he sees his dad, the current n1, die to the n2? He comes for n1.

FLCL 6 Episodes, idk man. it's fucking amazing tho. but it's just what the frick. ALiens with guitars and robots coming out of kids head. But hey i'ts just a story about a boy growing up. AMAZING SOUNDTRACK, and the fights were animated based on the soundtrack.

devilman crybaby

Amazing, strong second to last ep only weak point is the rushed last ep.

Seinfeld The best anime really, it's about nothing.

Bee movie

BzzTeemoBzz

I'm gonna stop here it's 5 am and i wanted to go to bed at 3 but riot had to be sexist.

some other stuff worth checking that popped up in my mind. Claymore (again cut short before manga ended) Season one of Sword art online Log horizon Tower of druaga Dungeon Meshi (it's a manga but it's honestly to good to never become an anime) Parasyte Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai (i'm gonna admit this one's a guilty pleasure since i was 16, it's random slice of life bs)

Ayzev8/8/2018, 7:24:31 AM1 votes

I haven't seen 1. and 5., but I thoroughly enjoyed 2.-4., so I guess it's worth tossing in my couple cents here

Soul Eater - I think it was episode 8 by which I really got hooked, so if the start seems maybe kinda okay, but not great, just hold out a bit more

Black Rock Shooter - loved the shit out of it, and judging from your list, the action it has should be a big plus for ya

To Aru Majutsu no Index - dunno what to say on this one, I just liked it. Season 3 should be coming soon too (™)

The World God Only Knows - very far from what I normally watch, but it still manages to be one of my favorites

And some stuff I deemed less noteworthy, mostly due to popularity:

Made in Abyss, Madoka Magica, Hunter x Hunter [2011], Fate / Zero, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Kirika8/8/2018, 7:41:49 AM1 votes

I personally liked D-Grey Man. It takes a bit time and you need to be interested with Death and mankinds handling of it as a major theme but the longer the anime goes the better it gets imo-

Puppet33r8/8/2018, 8:42:11 AM1 votes

Fate/Zero; Fate/Stay Night(2014!!!) Don't watch non ufotable fate stuff though. For good edgy and dark stuff

One Punch man; Mob Psycho 100 (from the same creator) for light fun+epic animations and overall interesting spin on shonen

Baka and Test for the comedy.

420 grams8/7/2018, 6:22:00 PM1 votes

Naruto is pretty good if you skip filler. You can Google the different arcs and it'll tell you which ones are filler. If you do skip all of the filler episodes, the show becomes about half as long which is a lot easier to get into. Otherwise Hellsing Ultimate is good, especially if you watch Hellsing abridged on YouTube. If you haven't seen Dragonball Z then watch Dragonball abridged on YouTube since it's entertaining and a lot shorter than trying to watch the whole anime. What id do is watch the abridged version so you get the plot, then look up the fights with no dialog so you get to see all the action. If you want something more light hearted, but then assassination classroom is pretty entertaining.

HeazonZ8/7/2018, 9:45:41 PM1 votes

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a really good one. The story and characters are great and there's a lot of action. It balances light hearted humor and serious drama very well. Plus the english voice acting is phenomenal.

Overlord, and Monster Musume are my go to's.
