Balancing MMR

While I understand that it's hard to make everyone happy more so with a video game, and that the MMR has some complex math behind it. What I don't understand is how when the highest ranking person on one team is Silver 5, you get a Plat 4 on the other team. My team consisted of a duo que bronze 5/4's which doesn't bother me, and a couple of unranked players. The enemy team is mostly bronze, again no big deal, but how did they end up with a Plat 4 jungle Ekko? I'm not saying we couldn't have won, because I think we could have... before our top lane got DC'd for over 10 mins giving their Gangplank free farm.

I just wan't to know how even with duo que, a Plat 4 ends up facing a Silver/Bronze/Unranked team. He did about as well as everyone else on his team so maybe he isn't that good and got boosted, I don't honestly know, I just know that half my team went into the game saying 'ff @ 20, plat jung no chance'. It's rather hard to over come this defeatist attitude before they go on tilt and you really have few options.

Are you saying this was a ranked game? What were the team MMRs?

I'm interested in this. Normal games (TBs & Blinds & Drafts) I've been queuing up with 2 of my buddies, both are Plats. When we appear to lose 2 to 3 games in a row, we get matched up with plat to master tiers, but very frequently we get matched up with unranked-silver-gold players when we're rolling on a winning streak. I just thought that this is so reversed.
