Regarding the unorthodox picks

So if it's truly punishable to play champs in an unusual position, why exactly do we have mid laners and for instance who don't have counters that play the same position? I mean this makes little sense to punish unorthodox picks when a champ's counter(s) aren't in the same position, thus forcing us to play in an abnormal manner to actually win lane against them.
