How do you predict?

So when higher people play they predict the enemy's shots or cc and dodge them. I try to do it but I fail most of the time. I noticed that I just block my brain and all I think about is killing the person I am fighting and I completly zone out and forget about other champions in game. I try not to do that. However when I try to predict I sometimes have to play the whole scenario in my head first. "ok so i am going to go in and then hit my q. They will probably throw their w so i am just going to flash to left". This is a good way for me to predict things but sometimes in the heat of a 5v5 you can't talk to yourself and predict the fight. You have to act in place. For example I see an adc footage of a diamond and out of no where jungle came out and the adc was dodging EVERYTHING, crazy.

How do you predict skillshots and cc? How did you get better at it and how can I get better at split second decisions?

A lot of it is up to experience.

Personally, I just think about when I would use [ability] if I were in their position and react accordingly. For example:

  • I'm walking into a chokepoint, so they will probably wait until I'm entering it to have a better chance of landing it
  • I have to turn this corner and lose distance, so they will probably throw it straight through
  • The best decision would be for me to approach [direction], so they'll probably predict that and aim there.
  • The ability just came off cooldown, so they will likely use it immediately

Some players can rely on their fast reaction time to dodge skillshots (watching the champion for specific animations), but I've never been the best at that and tend to rely on prediction.

Prediction is mostly about misdirection, in my experience. You don't always necessarily predict what the other guy is going to do just off the fly. You tend to subliminally lead him to perform that action, and then, knowing what he's going to do because you implanted the idea to do it into his or her head, you react to it.

Here's an example. You're laning against someone in top lane. Most laners know that the best time to harass someone is while they are in the middle of last hitting a minion, since there is a brief moment of immobility during the auto attack. By walking up to a minion like you're going to farm it, but not actually intending to, you make the other guy think you're going to last hit it, so he gets his harass ready. That's when you juke to the left or right because you know it's coming.

It's more a mind game than anything, but that's just my two cents
