Why are mid laners taking smite.

I am genuinely confused here, I keep up with the game pretty well and play often but this came out of no where. I have been playing jungle recently because crit adc's aren't as fun anymore. I thought I was getting trolled the first time because as I was doing my first buff the mid laner takes my raptors. That felt pretty bad but I just played it out and we won. Then it happened again, and again, and again and the laners still expect me to gank often with this xp deficit. I guess I just want to know what the strategy is and where it came from. It doesn't feel like a strat, it feels like greedy mid laners are trolling me. "shoutout to the morgana that only took the enemies raptors"
