The state of AP Kog'Maw and his new play style
(I realize this became a long text, but i have a summary/pros and cons+my suggestion further down) Like every AP Kog'Maw player, I was pretty worried when Riot decided to overhaul our dearest late game void monster. However, with the changes to his kit, his play style completely changed. He went from a feared mid to late game poking monster to a pure late game clean up monster with ridiculous mana problems throughout the entire game. But while his clean up capabilities are indeed astonishing, he suffers greatly in getting people low enough to make good use of his strengths. Before, you could hide behind a beefy front line and single-handedly poke out priority targets. However, now you have to wait for your team to do most of the work, kite back for as long as you can, before you assist them in cleaning up. However if your team is slightly behind, you are pretty much screwed. If your team has low damage, are squishy and overall weak from being deprived of farm and experience, there is very, very little you can do. On top of that, with the increased mana costs of his kit, the awkward build path of tear into rod of ages is absolutely necessary. If you refuse, you will never even see the ridiculously high mana cost of his fully stacked ult, a whopping 500 mana per cast! From full mana with the double mana build, you will even only be able to cast your ult once at full stacks. The total of spamming ult until it is fully stacked is an insane 2750 mana! With one cast of his other spells, your mana pool is now depleted. This is obviously not what you are supposed to do, as your ult damage to full health targets is ridiculously low. However cleaning up late in a fight, you will get those ult stacks. So with the need for the double mana build, Kog's build and power spikes becomes quite different than before. Say you are able to stay safe in lane (with no lane pressure from the 0 ap build early, poor follow up on ganks, little possibility to leave lane as you are forced to waveclear second, meaning poor vision control and poor efficiency at taking neutral objectives) and have decent cs, maybe you can have tear and roa around 13 minutes. At this point, opting into the previously attractive Ludens Echo is pretty much a waste; you wont have it until around 20 minutes, meaning people have started getting more health and possibly even magic resist which lowers the passives efficiency, and you now need both deathcap and void staff in your build to be proficient at what Kog excels at. That means, after boots, you only have room for one flex item to incorporate into your build when needed. This is a long time to wait for a champion to start having an impact on the game, especially with the recently increased costs of your core items. Obviously, this build will get you above 900 ap at six items, but most games lasts under 30 minutes these days. So of course, AP Kog (or Kog in general) is not the best meta pick at the moment (although he would be a lot better off if he could get Ludens right after tear), but he is bae, he is my boo.
Pros:
- %resist shred
- %max hp auto attacks
- Low cooldowns with 40%cdr (30 from glyphs and quints - personal preferance - and 10 from cdr boots)
- Has AOE slow
- High dmg to low hp targets (nearing 1000dmg late game)
- High range late game
- Fast pushing power late game
Cons:
- Low early game damage
- High mana costs throughout the game
- Low mobility
- Poor vision control
- Poor objective control
- Bad pushing power early game
- Awkward/slow build path with little room for variation if you want efficiency
- Reliant on team
- Reliant on blue buff
- Very vulnerable
- Takes a long time to scale up
- No hard cc
- Little room for counterplaying opponents
Additional con in my oppinion:
- Not balanced
My suggestion:
- Lower ult mana cost (base and scaling)
- Increase cooldowns
- Adjust base damages of spells
- Increase movement speed
- Adjust base stats Alternatively: Increase mana gain and regen of tear or increase mana gaing and regen of Seraphs (not tear or archangels)
And unlike Catalyst, chalice is an item you can potentially sit on without wasting it.
