is matchmaking stopping us from climbing and falling off the ladder

WARNING: this isnt a post complaing about me being "UH, PLACED WITH BRONZE SCRUB. I DESERVE CHALLENGOUR!!" its just that ive noticed that the current matchmaking system alter progress for elo with more people in it where the skill difference between each elo isnt that big (you can ignore platinium+)

a silver 5 player that win 2 or 3 games in row will still be silver 5, but instead play with silver 3 players a silver 5 player that lose 2 or 3 games in row will still be silver 5, but now play with and against bronze 2 players

i dont mind that a silver 5 plays against bronze 1 and silver 4 player to avoid too long matchmaking but matchmaking you with player of silver 3 players just because you have a few win will make it harder to win more WHILE STILL BEING SILVER 5 and if you manage to win this game, you will just be against silver 2 without being in that rank. it goes the same way wether you go up or down, the matchmaking will stop it and make it harder to climb/fall even if your skill actually is bronze 1/2 or silver 4/3. in elo where the skill difference isnt that big, this system stop you from being in the right elo (not by much, but it still matter a lot)

if we just let silver 5 play with bronze 1 and silver 4 player every game while ignoring win or loss streak. a better player will go up to his elo while a worse player will go down to his elo notice that im not saying "will be magically given a higher/lower elo" the player will just be at the place he deserve

being forced into a losing streak for every win streak you manage to get isnt fair if you win 10 games and go from silver 5 to silver 3, you shouldnt have to play with gold 5 and silver 1 player until you get in that 10 loss streak.

imagine if you made it like that in the game as well. every time you kill an opponent/get turret/get lv/get item, the enemy team gets stronger but you dont. you will get killed later on since they get bigger stat but in the end you will still win if you are a better player (couldnt think of a better example but it shows the frustration you feel with this system)

if we take that off, a player in silver 5 with skill level of silver 3 will mostly win until he reaches silver 3 while a silver 5 player with the skill level of a bronze 3 player will mostly lose until bronze 3

theses wins and loses will be fair ones at least

i used to be gold 5 (now silver 1 where i belong) but i managed to avoid demotion for a really long while just by winning that 1 game that i was placed with silver 2 after every few loses i only got demoted because i kept playing during the day (i tend to get dc during the day because other people use internet in my house and it kills my connection, but they dont at night) and i could have stayed in that elo and make the game harder for people in gold 5 / gold 4 playing. oh wait... i it could give a free win to the gold 3 players too if they had 2 or 3 loss recently. the problem isnt that it make the game impossible to climb, just like the example about enemy getting stronger every time you kill them, it just slow you down when it shouldnt

why do you think elo boosting is such a good business? you have to be alot better then all the players to climb, once you reach your level it just becomes ups and downs because from that point on you depend on your team playing correctly and nobody is realy better then the other the games just define by who has the better comp or if the players click and cordinate well but the losing team doesnt mean they where less skill just less luck.

So in conclution the game just becomes luck of the draw, being your teamates the draw.

This may happen when you don't have enough games played yet - your MMR moves much faster than your rank.

I know the feeling well, my first 4 seasons of ranked were the same. I'd get to my gold 5 promos, and have to beat players from gold 2 up to plat 3 in those games just to get INTO gold 5. Then I'd continue to play with people up to plat 3, when I myself was still in gold 5. Talk about frustrating. I'd win 1 lose 2 after getting gold 5 for a long time (and remember distinctly looking through my match history to confirm it was my allies losing in their plat 5 vs plat 5 matchups, while I was going even in a gold 5 v plat 3 matchup), but ranking didn't change as I'd gain 28 LP for a win and only lose 14LP for a loss. Until I'd eventually stop playing for the season because I couldn't stand losing 2/3rds of my games when I knew I deserved a higher rank than I was at (largely because everyone i was playing with was much higher ranked than me).

However this season I put in more games, and finally got to play with fairly consistent skill levels, and was able to easily climb into platinum (peaking at plat 2 promos before falling to plat 4 I think...) since I was playing against players at the right ranking. Guess I just needed to get to a couple hundred games in the season...
